About The Position

The Substitute Teacher's role is to be available to substitute teach at least 4 days of each month school is in session (36 days each school year). Substitutes are called in advance when possible, but often due to illness, they will be called the same day a substitute is needed. Substitutes typically take on the role of Class Instructor or Teacher's Aide, teaching reading, math, and spelling groups, requiring training in Direct Instruction programs. They are also responsible for supervising students during lunch, recess, and transitions to and from specialized classes. During DIBELS Benchmark Assessments (grades K-6), the substitute will be part of the DIBELS Assessment Team, assisting Administration in assessing students. These assessment responsibilities occur three times a year (September, January, and May), and if called to substitute during these times, DIBELS responsibilities take priority.

Requirements

  • Willingness to work at least 4 days per month throughout the entire school year.
  • Excellent work ethic.
  • Willingness to work whenever needed.
  • Comfortable asking questions when clarifications are needed.
  • Ability to do what is asked and also what may not be asked but still needs to be done.
  • Take the initiative to step up and do all he/she can to ensure students get a quality education when teachers or instructors are absent.
  • Positive attitude, a ready smile, a happy disposition, and a sense of humor in times of stress.
  • Cheerful can-do attitude when asked to go above and beyond.
  • Flexibility to step in and work even when things change at the last minute.
  • Willingness to work closely and in harmony with other staff members (accepting their input and direction).
  • Attend Direct Instruction training in the summer.
  • Be trained in Direct Instruction programs.
  • Good organization skills to coordinate home, family, work, and school responsibilities.
  • Willingness to travel between campuses to fill in vacancies.

Responsibilities

  • Be available to substitute teach at least 4 days of each month school is in session (36 days each school year).
  • Respond to phone calls and/or emails from staff immediately (when called the morning of) or within a 4-hour timeline (when called in advance).
  • Prepare to teach reading, math, and spelling groups (when called in advance to sub) by coming in early, reading scripts, preparing copies, and asking questions.
  • Follow teacher instructions left for you.
  • Maintain American Prep classroom management standards.
  • Keep data and records in Data Binder.
  • Supervise students during lunch time.
  • Supervise students when out at recess.
  • Report any problems to the homeroom teacher or other applicable staff members.
  • Attend all meetings (when applicable).
  • Work closely with staff members to ensure students are safe and engaged in learning.
  • Be part of the DIBELS Assessment Team and assist Administration in assessing K-6 students during DIBELS Benchmark Assessments (September, January, and May).
  • Prioritize DIBELS responsibilities if called to substitute during assessment periods.
