About The Position

Substitute Teachers assume responsibilities of the classroom teacher as directed by the campus principal and/or designee, providing instruction in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. They must adhere to federal and state laws, as well as, district policies, procedures, and regulations. This role involves checking in with campus administration, complying with attendance and discipline procedures, providing student instruction and supervision according to lesson plans, and monitoring student activities both inside and outside the classroom. Substitute teachers may also assist students with basic physical needs, provide instructional modifications and behavior management, and keep records as assigned. They are responsible for documenting student progress and activities daily and at the close of their assignment. Additionally, they must follow established safety procedures, participate in professional development, maintain a professional code of ethics, and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Certified substitute teachers must have a valid Texas teaching certificate.
  • Thirty (30) credit hours from an accredited college/university.
  • Must have command of the English language to include the ability to read, write, and speak.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Requires some bending, reaching, standing, kneeling and squatting.
  • Official Transcripts with a minimum of thirty (30) credit hours from an accredited college/university.
  • Three (3) professional references.
  • One (1) of the references needs to be from your current supervisor if you are working, your most recent supervisor if you are not.
  • Do not use family members or friends as references.

Responsibilities

  • Assume responsibilities of the classroom teacher as directed by the campus principal and/or designee.

  • Check in with campus administrator/site coordinator upon arrival and provide the assigned job number.
  • Comply with campus attendance and discipline procedures.
  • Provide student instruction and supervision as outlined in lesson plans.
  • Monitor student activities throughout the day inside and outside the classroom.
  • Assist students with basic physical needs.
  • Provide instructional modification and behavior management, as needed.
  • Keep records as assigned by the classroom teacher and/or site administrator or designee.
  • Document student progress and activities daily and at the close of the assignment.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques.
  • Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
  • Maintain a professional code of ethics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
