About The Position

This per diem position involves providing supervision and guidance to children in a nursery school setting, adhering to NAEYC accreditation standards. The role requires creating and maintaining a safe, stimulating, and organized classroom environment, keeping accurate records, and fostering positive relationships with children and their parents. The substitute teacher will also be responsible for providing physical care, preparing meals and snacks, and participating in special events and staff meetings. Continuous learning in Early Childhood Education is expected, with a requirement of 21 hours per year.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent
  • Twenty-four postsecondary semester or equivalent quarter units in Early Childhood Education or Child Development is required, three of these must be in an infant/toddler course.
  • 2 years Work experience in a licensed daycare center as an Infant/Toddler caregiver.
  • Good oral and written communication and interpersonal relations skills.
  • Exceptional patience and empathy.
  • Pleasant, gentle, and unhurried demeanor.
  • Ability to maintain utmost confidentiality.
  • Above average health, stamina, and the physical ability to move quickly bend and lift lightweight furniture and children.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision and guidance to children in an age-appropriate manner according to the NAEYC accreditation standards.
  • Create and maintain an appropriate classroom environment which is safe, organized, stimulating, clean and orderly.
  • Keep accurate records of children’s charts, sign in/out sheets, and maintain daily attendance records and assessments.
  • Report all suspected illness or accidents to either the Site Supervisor or Director for appropriate action.
  • Develop a caring relationship with children and their parents.
  • Meet with the parents informally to discuss the child’s daily progress.
  • Maintain knowledge in the field of Early Childhood Education or Child Development through continuing education, literature, workshops, or attendance at education in-service programs. (21 hours per year is required)
  • Follow all infection control procedures.
  • Prepare age-appropriate lesson plans that show progression for development (i.e., inside/outside activities).
  • Participate in planning and implementing special events for the Nursery School and hospital.
  • Report on any maintenance needs to the office.
  • Attend yearly parent meetings and regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Provide physical caregiving, diapering, and feeding as needed.
  • Prepare and serve nutritionally balanced snacks and meals.
  • Monitor the health and wellbeing of infants and/or toddlers.
  • Supervise daily charting.
  • Plan and implement appropriate developmental experiences for the infants.
  • Communicate with parents concerning their infant and/or toddler.
  • Supervise staff in the classroom and yard.
