About The Position

The Substitute Teacher provides instructional, behavioral, and classroom support across the Academy to ensure continuity of services during staff absences, shortages, or increased student needs. Serving as a flexible "float," this position delivers instruction, implements behavior support plans, supervises students, supports paraprofessionals, and maintains safe, structured learning environments for students with autism, developmental disabilities, and behavioral challenges. Substitute Teachers uphold BHA's Core Values by providing compassionate, trauma-informed care while maintaining consistency, professionalism, and high-quality educational services. This is a safety-sensitive position. Employees must safely perform essential job functions, including maintaining continuous alertness, providing direct student supervision, transporting students when required, and administering medications as trained, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required and must meet Missouri DESE Substitute Teacher certification requirements.
  • Missouri Substitute Teacher Certificate required.
  • Minimum two years of experience in education, behavioral health, or a related setting.
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Ability to follow instructional plans, behavior intervention plans, and classroom routines with fidelity.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional during behavioral crises.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and educational data systems.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to work across multiple classrooms and age groups.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with students with autism, developmental disabilities, or behavioral challenges preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of special education practices, data collection, and behavior management preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom coverage across the Academy while maintaining instructional continuity and student safety.
  • Deliver teacher-prepared lessons and support academic, functional, vocational, and social-emotional learning.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans, reinforcement systems, and classroom routines consistently.
  • Supervise students and support paraprofessionals in maintaining a structured learning environment.
  • Collect student data and complete required documentation accurately and timely.
  • Communicate relevant observations with teachers and clinical staff to support student progress.
  • Assist with arrival/dismissal, meals, recess, transitions, community outings, and crisis response as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all BHA policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned in support of Academy operations.
