About The Position

The primary role of the Substitute School Nurse is to provide primary health and emergency care to students, promote wellness, and serve as a resource for health concerns within the school setting. This position involves administering medications and treatments, providing care for student and staff illnesses and accidents, and managing individual health care plans and emergency care plans. The nurse will also act as a liaison between home and school regarding student health, document all encounters in the Electronic Health Record, and follow communicable disease control procedures, including informing administration and/or parents about school exclusion and readmission.

Requirements

  • Hold current, unrestricted, Illinois State license as a Registered Nurse, or Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Current certification in CPR
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Knowledge of current practices for common childhood illnesses and chronic diseases: allergies, asthma management, diabetes, insulin pen and pumps, seizure management
  • Ability to perform skilled nursing care such insulin administration, insulin pump skills and nebulizer treatments, inhalers, emergency medications
  • Providing first aid for various issues throughout the day and notify EMS if needed
  • Exceptional clinical documentation via a computer-based platform for all encounters
  • Manage complex situations and triage accordingly for grades K3-12th grade including but not limited to: head injury, psychiatric needs, potential anaphylaxis, trauma
  • Professing Christian with active participation in the local church body

Nice To Haves

  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing or related field
  • Experience in pediatric and/or community or public health nursing
  • Prior experience in school nursing, or acute care setting
