About The Position

The purpose of a school nurse job description is to define their critical role in supporting student health, safety, and academic success by managing illnesses, injuries, and chronic conditions. Requirements

  • LPN scope of practice as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Typical and atypical human growth and development of children and adolescents.
  • Typical and atypical anatomy and physiology in children and adolescents.
  • Common and less common pediatric health problems.
  • Current treatments and medications for pediatric health problems.
  • Skills in physical assessment, use of stethoscope, thermometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, and glucometer.
  • Skills and certification in CPR, AED and basic first aid.
  • Skills in word processing programs, spreadsheet programs, Infinite Campus, and use of the Internet.
  • Ability to work independently under the supervision of the school nurse.
  • Ability to use critical thinking skills to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate plan of care or intervention under the supervision of the school nurse.
  • Ability to be self-directed, autonomous, flexible, organized, and to prioritize.
  • Ability to set and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate with children and adolescents, parents, teachers, administrators, and health care providers.
  • Ability to adhere to federal and state statute and District Policy.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Current license to practice as a licensed practical nurse in Montana.
  • Current certification in CPR/AED and first aid.
  • Montana Driver’s license or the ability to obtain license within three months of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care to address the health needs of students, including emergencies.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of health care plans as directed by the RN.
  • Participate in the identification process of children with special needs as directed by the RN.
  • Maintain student health records.
  • Maintain immunization records and communicate with families about immunizations.
  • Conduct vision and hearing screenings.
  • Manage communicable/transmittable disease outbreaks.
  • Participate in case management for at-risk children.
  • Serve as a liaison between and resource for teachers, administrators, parents and community health partners.
  • Other functions may be required as given or assigned.
