About The Position

The Texas A&M University Children’s Center is seeking Early Childhood Teachers to join our substitute list. This is a great opportunity for educators who prefer flexible schedules or want to supplement their income during the summer. The position involves assisting with overall center operation in the rare absence of administrators, planning and implementing daily curriculum according to developmentally appropriate practices, and understanding the principles of responsive caregiving. The role requires possessing a well-articulated philosophy regarding child learning, social-emotional development, and positive guidance. The teacher will develop and implement emergent and project-based curriculum daily with integrated interest/learning areas, observe, record anecdotal notes, take photographs and videos of child development in the classroom for assessment, and fully include children from diverse backgrounds into classrooms with a variety of developmental needs. The position also involves demonstrating best practices in a model early childhood learning environment, following classroom routines, establishing individual and group goals with families, conducting family conferences, and sharing progress reports twice each year. Additionally, the role includes mentoring university students by guiding, supporting, and describing appropriate behaviors and effective practices, supervising and mentoring student employees by modeling positive interactions with children, and supervising indoor and outdoor activities to ensure safety. The teacher will also direct student employees to assist with supervision and follow policies regarding conducting research to assist faculty/students with data collection. Communication and collaboration involve assisting in planning, preparing, and implementing developmentally appropriate play-based and culturally responsive early learning experiences, assisting in resolving conflicts with children or parents, providing accommodations for children, and establishing and maintaining meaningful partnerships with children, families, colleagues, university faculty and staff, and the community. The role also assists in coaching and mentoring early childhood preservice teachers and student employees and establishing and maintaining good verbal and written communication with families. Regulatory compliance involves adhering to all policies and procedures dictated by the Children’s Center, Texas A&M University, the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, SACS/Cognia, and Texas Rising Star. The position also assists in ensuring all federal, local, state, and/or program documentation is complete and accurate. Research collaborations involve working with university researchers that support the production of new knowledge in the field of early childhood care and education, coordinating with researchers to implement studies, acting as an advocate for participating children, and following all center and university policies on research implementation. This position is security sensitive and requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU regulations and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • No prior experience required.
  • Pediatric CPR, Pediatric First Aid Certification, or the ability to be certified within 60 days of employment.
  • Knowledge of child growth and development, learning theories, effective learning environments, and appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Ability to assess the effectiveness of instructional strategies and learning environments.
  • Ability to give, receive, and reflect on constructive feedback.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with overall center operation in rare absence of administrators.

  • Establishes and maintains meaningful partnerships with children, families, colleagues, university faculty and staff, and the community.
  • Assists in coaching and mentoring early childhood preservice teachers and student employees through written and verbal feedback as needed.
  • Assists in supervising subs and student employees as assigned.
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining good verbal and written communication with families through daily and weekly communication.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures dictated by the Children’s Center, Texas A&M University, the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, SACS/Cognia, and Texas Rising Star to ensure compliance for state certification and national accreditation.
  • Assists to ensure all federal, local, state, and/or program documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Collaborates with university researchers that support the production of new knowledge in the field of early childhood care and education.
  • Coordinates with researchers to implement studies both within and outside of the classroom in ways that support the children’s psychological and physical needs.
  • Acts as an advocate for participating children.
  • Follows all center and university policies on the implementation of research occurring at Texas A&M University Children’s Centers.
