About The Position

This position performs heavy manual cleaning work in and around schools, buildings, and grounds. Substitute positions pay minimum wages as set by the U.S. Department of Labor or the State of Florida, whichever is higher.

The custodian cleans and maintains school facilities, including classrooms, restrooms, dining areas, floors, carpets, windows, and drinking fountains. The role also includes lawn and shrub maintenance, moving and stacking supplies, and setting up facilities for meetings, classrooms, and events. The position requires following instructions for the safe and proper use and mixing of cleaning chemicals and supplies.

Requirements

• Completion of eighth grade, with proof if attainable, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Some knowledge of methods and equipment used in custodial tasks.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions.
• Ability to perform work requiring strength.
• Ability to work continuous hours while standing.
• Ability to learn routine custodial and janitorial duties.
• Ability to stand for most of the day and frequently lift, carry, move, or position objects weighing 20 to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors and handle cleaning solvents and solutions.
• Ability to use assigned personal protective devices and equipment properly.

Nice To Haves

• Bilingual/biliterate ability is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Empty trash containers, pencil sharpeners, and other receptacles.
• Clean chalk trays and chalkboards; dust ledges, furniture, lights, and other surfaces; and replace spent light bulbs.
• Refill restroom dispensers.
• Strip, clean, burnish, and apply finish to hard-surface floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
• Clean and disinfect drinking fountains.
• Help maintain clean, safe, and sanitary toilet, shower, and dining room facilities.
• Wash walls, windows, and glass surfaces.
• Follow instructions for the proper use and mixture of chemicals and supplies.
• Assist lunchroom and warehouse personnel with stacking heavy crates, boxes, and similar items.
• Maintain dining room cleanliness as assigned.
• Set up facilities for meetings, classrooms, and events.
• Perform school grounds maintenance using lawnmowers, power edgers, hand lawn and garden tools, and other lawn- and shrub-maintenance tools.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
