About The Position

Hoquiam School District No. 28 is seeking a Substitute Custodian. This position requires regular attendance, good judgment, common sense, and confidentiality. The role involves performing cleaning and housekeeping duties, training new and substitute employees, operating cleaning equipment, maintaining building security, and performing light repairs. Flexibility to move between school buildings is also necessary.

Requirements

  • Must have regular attendance.
  • Must demonstrate good judgment, common sense, and confidentiality.
  • Must demonstrate courtesy and tact when dealing with students, staff and patrons.
  • Must be capable of standing/walking without restrictions.
  • Must have the ability to reach, grasp, handle and grip without difficulty on a continuous basis.
  • Stooping/bending or squatting is required on a frequent basis ranging from slight forward bending to floor level.
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects on a constant to frequent basis weighing 0-24 pounds; 25-50 pounds periodically.
  • Frequent to occasional pushing and pulling depending on work assignment.
  • Must have the ability to get along with students, staff and public.
  • Possess the ability to train and provide inservice sessions for custodians.
  • Maintain records and certification requirements.
  • Must be able to perform basic reading, writing and math skills.
  • Must be able to read labels and instructions when using chemicals, commercial products and maintenance/custodial directions.
  • Capable of hearing and communicating with students and staff.
  • Capable of presenting information in a concise and organized manner during training programs and in-service sessions.
  • Worker must be able to lift and carry over 50 lbs.
  • Must have good visual application to operate power equipment, tools and machinery and perform regular job tasks in a safe manner.
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to do required physical work.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Proof of citizenship (driver's license, birth certificate, social security card, passport, etc.).
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of cleaning & sanitation supplies; minor repairs; record keeping.

Responsibilities

  • Perform cleaning and housekeeping work under the direction of the head custodian.
  • Train new and substitute employees in proper cleaning, safety, and routine custodial and maintenance techniques.
  • Use power equipment and hand tools for cleaning and maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, and furniture.
  • Clean and sanitize toilet/shower rooms, sinks, and fixtures.
  • Empty wastebaskets and trash containers.
  • Clean chalkboards and erasers.
  • Dust furniture.
  • Sweep, mop, and polish floors.
  • Set up and remove furniture for special events.
  • Open and close buildings, prepare them for use, and maintain security.
  • Perform light electrical work, such as replacing light bulbs.
  • Clean, repair, and replace general items like blinds, doors, and window coverings.
  • Maintain heating, cooling, air returns, and filter covers.
  • Perform minor wall repair and painting.
  • Replenish tissue and other restroom supplies.
  • Wash linens and bedding.
  • Wash windows.
  • Maintain the immediate exterior of the building and campus, including litter removal, leaves, branches, and graffiti.
  • Read and interpret written instructions, service orders, and labels on chemicals and supplies.
  • Occasionally drive light trucks.
  • Keep work area and storage areas organized.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Be flexible to move from one school building to another.
  • Supervise other workers and complete work schedules when performing as Custodial Supervisor.
