About The Position

Substation Technician C is a non-exempt position focused on the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation equipment and systems. This role requires a 2-4 year working knowledge of substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring up to 525 kv. The position involves working in confined spaces and elevated areas, operating various construction equipment specific to the trade, and may require independent work or collaboration with others. Occasional long hours are expected during emergency conditions, and the position may involve travel to different locations, including other states, based on customer demands.

Requirements

  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
  • Possess or be capable of obtaining a Commercial Drivers’ License.
  • Supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
  • Supply own safety toed work boots.

Nice To Haves

  • 2-4 year working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring.
  • Capable of learning to operate various types of heavy equipment: Bucket, derrick and boom trucks, Backhoes, excavators and skid steer loaders, Articulating Man-lifts, Pressure Diggers, Trenchers, Track Crawler Loader/Backhoe, Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklifts.

Responsibilities

  • Works safely while performing construction, maintenance, repair, testing, adjusting, and troubleshooting of substation equipment/systems.
  • Performs work involving concrete foundations, ground grids, and steel erection.
  • Works with buswork (High and Low Voltage).
  • Installs and maintains airbreak / hookstick switches.
  • Performs control cable terminations (High / Low Voltage).
  • Works with control buildings.
  • Installs conduit and duck banks.
  • Performs capacitor bank installations.
  • Works with 23kv- 230 kv transformers, regulators, and circuit breakers.
  • Works with circuit switchers, motor-operated and manual switches.
  • Responsible for maintaining Company vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working condition.
  • Works with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
  • Follows Company safety rules and policies.
  • Gains knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
  • Works in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
  • Utilizes knowledge of substation structural drawings (i.e. elevations, plan views, section views, grounding details, and foundation plans).
  • Works for extended periods in various locations, when requested.
  • Works outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.
