About The Position

Substation Technician -B is a non-exempt position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation equipment/systems. This role requires 4-6 years of continuous working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring. The position involves work in confined spaces and elevated areas, utilizing various construction equipment specific to the trade. A Substation Technician- B may work independently or with others, occasionally working long hours during emergency conditions. This position should be able to coach subordinates on the crew and may work at various locations, potentially traveling to other states depending on customer demands.

Requirements

Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
Capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
Possess a Commercial Drivers’ License.
Supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
Supply own safety toed work boots.
Capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
Capable of working in confined spaces/areas.
Able to work independently or with others.
Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment: Bucket, derrick and boom trucks, Backhoes, excavators and skid steer loaders, Articulating Man-lifts, Pressure Diggers, Trenchers, Track Crawler Loader/Backhoe, Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklifts.
Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested.
Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.
Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
Knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
Capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
Capable of interpreting substation structural drawings (i.e. elevations, plan views, section views, grounding details, and foundation plans).
Retained knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.

Responsibilities

Perform new construction, maintenance, repair, testing, adjusting, and troubleshooting of substation equipment/systems.
Work involving concrete foundations, ground grids, and steel erection.
Work involving buswork (High and Low Voltage).
Work involving airbreak / hookstick switches.
Work involving control cable terminations (High / Low Voltage).
Work involving control buildings.
Work involving conduit and duck banks.
Work involving capacitor bank installations.
Work involving 23kv- 230 kv transformers, regulators, and circuit breakers.
Work involving circuit switchers, motor-operated and manual switches.
Maintain Company vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working condition.
Work with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care.
Interpret substation structural drawings (i.e. elevations, plan views, section views, grounding details, and foundation plans).
Communicate with customers and subordinates.
Appraise technical situations accurately.
Coach subordinates on the crew.
Develop and interpret a material list.
Trace out phasing in a substation and verify to the three line diagrams.
Establish grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable trough in new and existing stations.
Grade and finish concrete slabs and foundations.
Perform routine carpentry work on building wood concrete forms to meet size and shape of concrete to be placed.
