About The Position

WSP is seeking an experienced Substation Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery Substation Civil/Structural Group. This role involves providing technical assistance and guidance for the planning, analysis, design, and delivery of structural engineering solutions for electrical substation projects in both public and private sectors. Tasks include research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of load-bearing structures and elements such as steel structures, rigid bus supports, and foundations. The engineer will generate accurate reports and documentation for material, installations, and construction specifications, ensuring adherence to industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural or civil design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and application to project work-related issues.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
  • Knowledge with process and concepts for sustainability, and reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances/greenhouse gas.
  • Knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform professional structural engineering work, including research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, buildings, infrastructure, and transportation channels to ensure conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
  • Incorporate advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality, and to incorporate future-ready solutions with structural engineering design standards.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams of engineers, architects, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work, assist with laying out installations, establishing reference points/elevations/grades, selecting appropriate materials, calculating costs and quantities, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications and documentation.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on structural soundness against loads and pressures.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, and 2D/3D illustrations.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements, analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with the development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations.
  • Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on design and construction problems or plan for future needs.
  • Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data from site investigations and develop action plans for risk mitigation.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Collaborate with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on various improvement and development projects.
  • Mentor and support the development of junior team members through technical guidance and knowledge sharing.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
