About The Position

Dominion Energy is seeking a Physical Design Standards Consulting Engineer within the Substation Engineering Standards team. This role serves as the senior technical authority for substation physical design standards, focusing on mechanical or electrical engineering to support the entire lifecycle of substation infrastructure. The position involves leading the development, interpretation, and governance of engineering standards, typical drawings, material specifications, and design requirements to ensure safe, consistent, and high-quality substation designs for both capital projects and O&M work. The engineer will act as a key technical consultant for engineering staff, project teams, EPC partners, and management on complex physical design challenges, including equipment layout, bus systems, grounding, raceway systems, and equipment interfaces, while promoting long-term reliability and constructability. Responsibilities include leading major standards initiatives, conducting engineering studies, improving existing materials and design practices, developing purchase specifications, and supporting the modernization of design platforms and standard deliverables. The role also ensures compliance with relevant codes and industry standards (e.g., ANSI/NESC, IEEE, NFPA/NEC) and provides technical leadership through mentoring, training, peer review, and cross-disciplinary coordination to mitigate risk and ensure consistent engineering outcomes.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience with general arrangement, one-line diagrams, and substation physical design required (experience in equipment layout, grounding, raceway systems, and equipment interfaces).
  • Demonstrated experience developing, maintaining, or governing engineering standards, specifications, or design criteria.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
  • Recognized expert by other engineers and leadership, serving as an SME providing technical consultation to engineers, project teams, and leadership.
  • Effective working independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
  • Full knowledge of electric T&D engineering theories, standards, and principles with focus on electric transmission substations.
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team or project lead.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Strong ability to mentor, coach, and develop engineering staff.
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program or equivalent as defined in the job description.
  • Military service members and veterans with ranks from E5-E9, W1-CW5, or O3-O6, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience will be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with substation design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, Autodesk applications) preferred.
  • Preferred Disciplines: Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited.
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
