  • 10+ years of progressive experience in substation design, engineering, and project management of high-voltage substation projects (69 kV to 500 kV).
  • Proven ability to manage multidisciplinary teams of engineers, designers, drafters, contractors, and vendors to deliver projects within budget, schedule, and quality standards.
  • Familiarity with RUS (Rural Utility Services), ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NESC, NERC, and other codes and standards related to power delivery and substation design.
  • Ability to manage project risks, including change orders, delays, and cost overruns, while meeting client expectations.
  • Expertise preparing scopes of work (SOWs), technical specifications, and procurement packages for substation projects.
  • Familiarity with construction management, including site assessments, material testing, quality control processes, and electrical-substation commissioning.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% for site visits, client meetings, and project coordination, and flexibility to accommodate project timelines, including occasional extended site stays or travel.
  • Ability to visit other locations and perform the described physical activities, including standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting, carrying, or moving light to medium weights of 10–50 pounds; requires hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, and visual acuity.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, design, procurement, and delivery of substation projects from initiation to completion, managing timelines, budgets, resources, and client expectations.
  • Supervise, mentor, and guide engineers, designers, and drafters, fostering a collaborative team environment and meeting project milestones and quality standards.
  • Oversee the design and procurement of protective relaying equipment, substation physical layouts, and protection/control schemes for transmission and distribution substations.
  • Ensure project designs comply with customer requirements, industry standards, and regulations.
  • Serve as the primary client contact, provide technical expertise and project updates, and resolve issues or technical challenges.
  • Ensure the accuracy and quality of design documentation, including site drawings, CADD work, and engineering studies; review and approve deliverables.
  • Identify project risks and issues and develop mitigation strategies to help avoid delays and cost overruns.
  • Assess and improve project processes to support on-budget, on-schedule delivery and better project outcomes.
  • Ensure regulatory and code compliance and prepare or review close-out documentation, including final reports and as-built drawings.
