About The Position

The Engineer III – Substation Physical Design leads physical design of high-voltage substations supporting renewable energy interconnections. This work requires independent judgment, comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to translate client documentation and utility interconnection requirements into actionable physical engineering deliverables. This is a hands-on, production-focused role that calls for strong engineering judgment, comfort with ambiguity, and the confidence to move designs forward independently while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary partners in an employee-owned culture accelerating the clean-energy transition.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or greater in a related engineering discipline, Bachelor’s degree preferred. Candidates without a 4-year degree may be considered for “Substation Designer III” role.
  • 5+ years of relevant substation physical design experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, including 3D Design experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing: General arrangement drawings.
  • Working knowledge of high-voltage substation equipment and physical design standards.
  • High level of independence paired with sound judgment to seek guidance when appropriate.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills suitable for client-facing discussions.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage fast-turn assignments.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced proficiency with 3D substation design tools such as Inventor, Bentley, Revit or similar.
  • Experience with renewable energy interconnection substations.
  • Transmission line design exposure (e.g., PLS-CADD) with a substation steel orientation.
  • Prior client-facing experience in a consulting environment.
  • Experience supporting both development and EPC delivery phases.
  • Coding, scripting, or process automation experience (Python).
  • Experience overseeing subconsultants or coordinating multi-discipline inputs.
  • PE license or EIT certification.

Responsibilities

  • Develop physical substation design packages for renewable energy substations and/or utility interconnections, including general arrangement drawings, plan/section/elevation views, equipment layouts, bus arrangements, and preliminary steel and foundation quantities.
  • Support the development of substation structural steel and foundation drawings in alignment with the project structural engineers to maximize efficient design practices.
  • Develop grounding, lightning protection, and conduit/raceway layouts as required.
  • Translate utility interconnection requirements and client documentation into clear, actionable preliminary physical deliverables.
  • Adapt designs in fast-paced development environments with limited or evolving information.
  • Produce high-quality AutoCAD drawings and 3D substation models consistent with Revamp standards.
  • Coordinate with protection & control, civil, structural, and power systems teams to deliver integrated design packages.
  • Review subconsultant deliverables for technical accuracy, quality, and schedule alignment.
  • Contribute to detailed, full-design physical tasks for other substation projects within the team.
  • Support client interaction for multiple projects within a portfolio.
  • Present design assumptions and respond to technical feedback.
  • Serve as a technical point of contact for early-stage physical scope.
  • Coordinate with project managers to align client deliverables.
  • Ensure documentation aligns with utility interconnection requirements and client expectations.
  • Apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria independently.
  • Leverage experienced staff for clear design direction as needed.
  • Formulate and solve complex substation physical design problems.
  • Ensure compliance with company, industry, trade, and jurisdictional safety standards, practices, and codes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve templates, workflows, and design efficiency.
  • Develop work plans for assigned tasks.
  • Provide mentorship to less experienced staff as appropriate.
  • Perform essential duties including meeting deliverables and deadlines.
  • Perform additional related tasks as assigned.
