About The Position

The Substation Engineer works in a project team with engineers and designers on detailed electrical design and project management for high-voltage substation projects. The role participates in project conceptualization, work planning, and execution; investigates and resolves electrical engineering issues; and prepares clear, concise technical and project reports that meet client requirements and S&L formats. Professional development is supported through peer learning and S&L’s Communities of Practice. Travel to client sites may be required. The position has a hybrid arrangement: three days per week in the office and two days working remotely. A relocation package may be available depending on location.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
• At least 3 years of experience designing medium-voltage power systems.
• Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects within budget and schedule constraints.
• Experience tracking project schedules and expenditures against budgets, preparing status reports, and interfacing with clients.
• Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
• Experience reviewing design drawings created by others.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE).
• Degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
• At least 1 year of experience designing substations at 138 kV and above.
• Ability to prepare substation grounding, direct-stroke shielding, and battery and charger sizing calculations.
• Physical layout and protection and controls experience.
• Ability to work with a designer to develop substation single-line diagrams, relaying and metering diagrams, DC schematic diagrams, substation plans and sections, and grounding plans.
• Familiarity with ANSI, IEEE, and NEMA standards related to substation design, including the National Electrical Safety Code (ANSI C2).
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• AutoCAD experience.
• Interest in learning and effectively using relevant emerging technologies; experience with AI, automation, or programming is valued where relevant.

Responsibilities

• Develop professionally through peer learning and knowledge sharing within S&L’s Communities of Practice.
