About The Position

HDR Engineering is seeking a Substation Civil Structural EIT/Designer to join its Power Delivery team. The role supports technical design on high-voltage substation engineering projects, ranging from structure replacements to large greenfield projects. It is described as an entry-level opportunity for a self-directed person eager to learn and take on new challenges. The successful candidate performs routine engineering assignments with guidance, works independently on small projects or assists senior engineers on larger projects, and may support multiple projects concurrently. Some travel may be required. Work includes designing substation structural members and foundations; preparing physical substation layouts, drawings, details, and bills of materials; and preparing or reviewing construction and material specifications. The position also supports quality reviews under HDR’s Quality Management Systems and collaboration and cross-training with transmission-line civil/structural engineers. Candidates without an EIT may be hired as a Substation Civil/Structural Designer and are expected to obtain the EIT for career progression.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and AutoCAD, RISA, Staad, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE, or similar tools.
  • Commitment to being an active participant in HDR's employee-owned culture.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate; candidates without an EIT may be hired as a Substation Civil/Structural Designer and are expected to obtain it for career progression.
  • Familiarity with ASCE-113, AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other industry standards.
  • Experience using industry-standard design software, including AutoCAD, RISA, Staad, SAP, PLS-Tower, and Mathcad Prime.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong time-management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine engineering assignments with instruction from the Project Engineer or others regarding expected results.
  • Work independently on small projects or assist more-senior engineers on larger projects.
  • Design substation structural members, including rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes; perform detailed design, calculations, and fabrication detailing, or develop loading and concept drawings for steel fabricators.
  • Design foundations for substation structures, including drilled piers, spread footings, and driven piles, using industry-standard software.
  • Support physical substation layout designs, plans, elevations, sections, details, and associated bills of materials.
  • Prepare and/or review construction and material specifications.
  • Coordinate quality checks and reviews of project deliverables in accordance with HDR Quality Management Systems requirements, processes, and procedures.
  • Collaborate and cross-train with transmission-line civil/structural engineers and share resources.
  • Support multiple projects concurrently.
  • Travel as required.
