About The Position

HDR Engineering is seeking a Substation Building Information Modeling (BIM) 3D Designer to join its Substation group within Power Delivery. The designer will support large- and small-scale substation engineering projects and will have opportunities to learn and take on new challenges.

The role involves 3D modeling and substation design using 3D AutoCAD and MicroStation, as well as preparing design drawings, documents, and material lists for simple to moderately complex projects. Most design responsibilities are performed with assistance and guidance from engineers; simple projects may be handled independently. Additional work includes incorporating vendor information into design deliverables, conducting field reviews and walk-downs at client facilities, and applying client standards.

Requirements

• A technical degree or a minimum of 3 years of related industry experience.
• Technical qualification with 3D design software and document management infrastructure.
• Competency with Microsoft Office products and communication tools.
• Experience with 3D coordination tools.
• Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and organizational traits.
• Intermediate understanding of engineering or architectural concepts.

Nice To Haves

• An associate degree in drafting, a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, or a high school diploma with 3 or more years of drafting coursework or equivalent technical experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
• 3 or more years of substation design experience.
• Advanced knowledge of 2D and 3D AutoCAD and MicroStation software and raster CAD.
• Electrical utility or similar design experience.
• Experience in both Protection and Control (Indoor) and Physical (Outdoor) aspects of high-voltage substation design.
• Experience with substation design, including One Line Diagrams, General Arrangements Sections, material lists (Bill of Materials/BOM), Lightning Stroke Shielding Plans, Conduit, Electrical Connection and Grounding Plans and Details, Control Building Equipment, Cable Tray and Lighting Plans, Foundation Plans, and Relay and Control Systems Schematics and Wiring Diagrams.
• Ability to independently make design and engineering decisions for low- to moderately complex projects with minimal oversight.
• Ability to work directly with clients and strong communication skills.
• Preference given to candidates in the local area.

Responsibilities

• Perform 3D modeling and design for substation projects using 3D AutoCAD and MicroStation.
• Perform substation and CADD design tasks, develop design drawings and documents, and prepare material lists for simple to moderately complex projects.
• Perform design responsibilities with assistance, guidance, and input from engineers on simple to moderately complex projects.
• Work independently on simple projects and perform CAD work and functions with little to no guidance.
• Interpret and incorporate vendor information into design deliverables.
• Perform field reviews and walk-downs at client facilities.
• Apply client standards related to the work.
