About The Position

The Substance Use Counselor Assistant works as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a clinic setting, focusing on patient flow, behavior management, and assisting clinical staff during medication dispensing periods. This role also supports intake and referral activities, care coordination, and toxicology screens. The position requires excellent patient service skills, independent judgment in patient care activities, and a positive, approachable demeanor. Requirements

  • Associate’s degree required
  • One year of experience in patient care setting or equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, procedures and computer experience
  • Proficient with use of Microsoft Office products, office technology and the ability to learn new technology required.
  • Must have effective verbal and written communication skills, ability to demonstrate exceptional caring, concern and positive experience for patients.
  • Ability to work as an integral member of a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Experience working in an addiction treatment patient care setting and with providing addiction training preferred.
  • Eligibility for CASAC-T credentials upon hire preferred

Responsibilities

  • Works as part of a multi-disciplinary team that includes Substance Use Disorder Counselors, Nurses and Providers.
  • Serves as an integral component of the clinic's milieu management during medication dispensing periods to manage patient flow inside, and at times outside, the clinic, observing and responding to behavior issues.
  • Functions as primary assistant to clinical staff assigned to each dispensing period throughout the week and alerts the clinical staff when intervention is indicated to prevent potential conflicts, etc.
  • Assists with Intake & Referral team activities related to phone screens and orientation and assists counselors with care coordination and toxicology screen activities.
  • Performs a variety of technical, procedural and information systems tasks which facilitate the delivery of patient care in an efficient manner.
  • Demonstrates excellent patient service skills in accordance with ICARE Values throughout the course of patient visits.
  • Exercises skill, with latitude for independent judgment in decisions regarding patient care activities, procedural activities, education and follow-up to facilitate efficient operations.

  • Manages milieu of patients during dispensing period, directs and maintains patient flow inside and outside the clinic, observes patient behaviors and provides assistance accordingly.
  • Assist with patient engagement to clinical services
  • Responsible for caseload management and conducts therapeutic sessions focused on engagement and follow-up, conduct aftercare sessions, co-facilitate group therapy, observe and co-facilitate intakes, complete phone screens independently, assist with referrals.
  • Assist the Intake and Referral Team with initial phone screens.
  • Also assist with clinic orientation, case management, and basic crisis response.
  • Provides some psycho- education; referral; care coordination.
  • Ensures accurate and timely reporting and recordkeeping.
  • May collect data for quality improvement studies, and work with clinical leadership to identify areas for improvement of patient experience.
  • Aid in administering breath alcohol screens and prepare documentation needed for toxicology screens, and conduct mouth swabs.
  • Conducts brief meetings with patients to help with coordination of care, assist with referrals, complete state reporting forms.
