About The Position

Implements and maintains an effective Trainee Employee Assistance Program (TEAP), in compliance with the Department of Labor (DOL) and management directives, emphasizing substance abuse awareness, prevention, staff training, and networking with community resources. This role involves assessing students for substance use, providing individual and group counseling, participating in new student orientations, and ensuring follow-up for students who have completed the TEAP program. The specialist will also provide prevention education training to students and in-service training to staff, collaborate on leisure activities, recommend medical separations when necessary, and act as a liaison between the center and external resources. The position requires maintaining confidential reports and records.

Requirements

  • MUST HAVE State Alcohol and Drug Counselor certifications as Substance Abuse Counselor with FULL CASAC
  • Two years of related experience
  • Valid New York State driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to design, develop, and implement a program for intervention and abuse, related to alcohol and other drugs
  • Proficient in training staff and students on the signs, symptoms, early warning signs, and identification of alcohol and other drug uses and abuse, and the disease of alcohol and drug dependency
  • Demonstrated ability to assess student's need for inpatient/outpatient substance abuse treatment and, when appropriate, coordinate access to these services
  • Demonstrated ability to assist students receiving drug and alcohol treatment in developing and maintaining social support networks, and self-help support groups
  • Proven track record of developing trusting relationships to enhance successful substance abuse outcomes, by educational, behavioral, and motivational interventions.
  • Fluently reading, writing, and communicating in English
  • Hearing and speaking to express ideas and, or exchange information in person or over the telephone
  • Seeing to read road maps, road signs, labels, posters, documents, PC screens, etc.
  • Sitting, standing, and moving about, or walking for occasional or frequent periods
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment
  • Kneeling, bending at the waist, stooping, and reaching overhead
  • Retrieving and storing files and supplies
  • Occasionally carrying and, or lifting light objects

Responsibilities

  • Makes assessments of all students to determine those who might require interventions due to substance use
  • Conduct individual and group counseling for students who may require interventions
  • Participate in the orientation of new students during the Career Preparation Period
  • Ensure all students who test positive for drugs are retested within the 45-day Probationary Period
  • Provide follow-up counseling to students who have completed TEAP to encourage and prevent relapses
  • Provide prevention education training to student employees during all phases of the Job Corps program
  • Conduct in-service training sessions with both staff and students in all areas related to substance use and abuse
  • Collaborate with the Recreational department in developing leisure time activities and incentives to reinforce an alcohol and drug-free lifestyle
  • Recommend medical separations with reinstatement for students who require alcohol and other drug treatments
  • Act as a liaison between center and agency resources and referral contacts
  • Maintain confidential reports and records on all referrals and cases
