About The Position

VTG is seeking a Subject Matter Expert (Associate)-Cable Engineer to support our customer. Under broad direction, this role provides expert support, analysis, and research into complex problems and processes related to the subject matter. The individual will serve as a technical expert on high-level project teams, providing technical direction, interpretation, and alternatives. This role requires independent thinking, superior written and oral communication skills, and a complete understanding and wide experience in the application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field. The Subject Matter Expert will provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems, which are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organizational objectives. The role works under general direction, independently determining and developing approaches to solutions, and contributing to the completion of specific programs and projects. Expertise is expected in a particular area of Information Technology (e.g., Information Systems Architecture, Telecommunications Systems Design, Architecture, Implementation, Information Systems Integration, Software Development Methodologies, Security Engineering, Communications and Network Systems Management), or a specific functional area (e.g., finance, logistics, and operations research). Additionally, the role involves splicing overhead, underground, or submarine multiple-conductor cables used in telephone communication and electric-power transmission systems. This includes climbing utility poles or towers, utilizing truck-mounted lift buckets, or descending into sewers and underground vaults where cables are located. Responsibilities include cutting lead sheath from installed cable, cutting and peeling lead sheath and insulation from newly installed cables, testing conductors to identify corresponding conductors, cleaning, tinning, and splicing conductors, covering conductors with insulating or fireproofing materials, fitting lead sleeves, wiping molten lead into joints, and filling completed sleeves with insulating oil. The role may involve working on energized circuits, locating and repairing leaks in pressurized cable, or working on board marine craft when splicing underwater cable.

Requirements

BA/BS in a technical discipline
At least 5 years of experience
Must have and maintain a Secret clearance
Eligible for a Top Secret clearance

Splices overhead, underground, or submarine multiple-conductor cables used in telephone communication and electric-power transmission systems.
Climbs utility poles or towers, utilizes truck-mounted lift bucket, or descends into sewers and underground vaults where cables are located.
Cuts lead sheath from installed cable to gain access to defective cable connections, using hacksaw.
Cuts and peels lead sheath and insulation from newly installed cables and conductors preparatory to splicing.
Tests (traces or phases-out) each conductor to identify corresponding conductors in adjoining cable sections, according to electrical diagrams and specifications, to prevent incorrect connections between individual communication circuits or electric power circuits, using test lamp or bell system.
Cleans, tins, and splices corresponding conductors by twisting ends together or by joining ends with metal clips and soldering each connection.
Covers conductors with insulating or fireproofing materials.
Fits lead sleeve around cable joint and wipes molten lead into joints between sleeve and cable sheath to produce moisture proof joint.
Fills completed sleeve with insulating oil.
May work on energized circuits to avoid interruption of service.
May locate and repair leaks in pressurized cable.
May work on board marine craft when splicing underwater cable.
