About The Position

The Seamer Operator is an Individual Contributor responsible for the set-up and operation of the flux core sub-arc seam welding machine to place a continuous seamed weld on one or two sides of the pole shafts. This role involves fusing metal structural components together using Submerged Arc Welding processes in the fabrication of steel electrical poles and other structures. The position requires planning and layout, working from blueprints and drawings, understanding welding properties of various metals, setting up work, determining operation sequences, and performing welding operations on objects with critical safety and load requirements. It also includes performing repetitive assembly operations, using hand tools and measuring devices, and moving pole shafts using an overhead crane.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of an internal welding test.
  • Working knowledge of fixturing and weld set up parameters (amps, volts, etc.).
  • Knowledge of welding properties of a variety of metals.
  • The ability to read and interpret blueprints and/or shop drawings.
  • The ability to set up work and determine operation sequence.
  • The ability to calculate formulas using basic mathematics and standard U.S. and Metric Measurements.
  • The ability to recognize and solve practical problems or issues.
  • The ability to work in a team environment with a diverse group of people.
  • The ability to pay attention to detail and follow work instructions.
  • The ability to meet production, safety, and quality standards in a high-paced working environment.
  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with most frequent lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment and follow facility safety regulations.
  • Maintain a safe and productive working environment.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Graduation from an accredited trade school for welding.
  • One (1) year previous experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • One (1) year previous experience welding in a professional environment.

Responsibilities

  • Fuse (weld) metal structural components together by means of multiple forms of Submerged Arc Welding processes in the fabrication of steel electrical poles and other structures.
  • Perform welding operations requiring planning and layout, working from blueprints and drawings or other specifications.
  • Set up work and determine operation sequences.
  • Weld objects involving critical safety and load requirements.
  • Perform repetitive types of assembling operations according to procedures established by others.
  • Use hand tools and measuring devices in the performance of work.
  • Move pole shafts using an overhead crane and gather parts and materials to complete the project.
  • Setup, operate, and perform general maintenance of equipment without difficulty.
  • Make mathematical calculations in preparing product or setting up the machinery.
  • Read and decipher blueprints and flat sheets correctly and without assistance.
  • Work under conditions with accurate performance and completion of work within set time limits.
  • Accountable and responsible for essential tools and equipment provided along with the maintenance of these tools and equipment.
  • Actively participate in department safety, demonstrates excellent safety practices and behaviors which conform to all Valmont safety policies and procedures.
