About The Position

The Studio Manager position at Cranbrook Academy of Art is designed for exceptional post-graduate artists who have recently completed their MFA or M.Arch and are preparing for future careers in higher education studio settings. This role offers experience in the administrative and technical aspects of running an art department, working in a secondary position to a department’s Artist in Residence (AIR). Studio Managers support the administrative and/or technical studio operations led by the AIR, contributing to the educational mission of the Academy's departments and community. This is a temporary, part-time position with work hours ranging from 10-25 per week during the academic year. Studio Managers receive access to labs, the library, and other academic resources, and may engage in their own creative research and professional practice. A dedicated studio space may be provided if available and approved.

Requirements

  • Exceptional post-graduate artists who have recently completed their MFA or M.Arch.
  • Interest in administrative and technical aspects of running a department.
  • Ability to complement the leadership of an Artist-in-Residence (AIR).

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the AIR to provide a departmental working environment that engenders educational excellence characterized by innovation, safety, and support for the program’s students.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and critiques as appropriate.
  • Provide administrative support for academic activities, such as visiting artists, departmental schedule and activities, and department purchasing card.
  • Provide administrative support for physical facilities in the department, such as equipment oversight, studio maintenance, and ordering supplies.
  • Support opportunities for interdisciplinary activities among the programs of the Academy.
  • Support student work presented in degree exhibitions.
  • Help to manage the activities of the Departmental Assistant(s).
