About The Position
The Lariat news, sports, and Arts & Entertainment (A&L) writers are responsible for covering beats, providing weekly budgets to editors, and writing multiple stories per week. This role requires a strong understanding of news values, the ability to write accurately under deadline pressure, and proficiency in news writing, feature writing, and AP style. Writers must also possess good interpersonal skills, and sports writers need familiarity with sports terminology. The position involves constant communication with editors regarding coverage and upcoming projects, and a willingness to work independently and collaboratively.
Requirements
- Solid understanding of news values
- Ability to write accurately on deadline
- Well versed in news writing and feature writing skills
- Strong command of grammar, spelling and AP style
- Good interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with sports terminology (for sports writers)
Responsibilities
- Covers a beat
- Provides a weekly budget to their respective editors each Wednesday night
- Writes at least four news/sports/A&L stories per week (two for part-time writers)
- Writes news, feature and in-depth stories
- Provides news for baylorlariat.com in a timely manner
- Is in constant communication with editors regarding daily coverage and upcoming projects
- Exhibit a willingness to take initiative and work independently and collaboratively
