About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the High School Principal and/or designee and working collaboratively with the High School administration and in accordance with School Committee policy, Student Support Specialists are involved in monitoring students in various settings throughout the school to ensure their safety and well–being. They collaborate with other staff to support the maintenance of a positive, inclusive, safe school environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to take direction from administrators and work collaboratively with staff in providing an inclusive, safe, and supportive environment for students.
  • Ability to understand the behavioral expectations established in the Student Handbook and other related documents and to work with the adults in the building to address student issues if they arise.
  • Ability to work with and understand adolescents and to de-escalate potential confrontations.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous work experience with adolescents preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a welcoming and inclusive school environment that upholds the values of Andover High School while building strong rapport with students and staff.
  • Supervise the orderly flow of students in the school building and on school grounds.
  • Check bathrooms, hallways, stairwells, building exits and entrances, parking lots and other locations within the building and on school grounds on a regular basis to ensure students are on task.
  • Monitor students while in the cafeteria during breakfast, H blocks, lunch, and other designated times to ensure students behave appropriately and dispose of their trash in an orderly fashion.
  • Promotes school and class attendance, including communication with students and parents.
  • Facilities all aspects of the tardy procedures outlined in the student handbook.
  • Participate in team meetings regarding students, including Student Support Teams and the Student Spotlight Committee, as needed.
  • Ensure visitors to the building sign in and sign out.
  • Monitor students during detention.
  • Escort students to designated locations, e.g., classes, office, etc., upon request.
  • Collect and compile student data related to student attendance and tardiness.
  • Support the Assistant Principals, 9th Grade Coordinator, counselors and registrar on welcoming families to the school and providing tours.
  • Work with students or student groups as assigned by the Principal or designee.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
