About The Position

The Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is seeking a Part-Time Student Support Officer to provide administrative and student-facing support. This role involves assisting prospective students with post-secondary transitions, helping current students access documentation, and conducting intake interviews. The officer will collaborate with students and psychologists on assessments and funding, coordinate ASL services for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, and support Educational Assistants, Visual Interpreters, and Personal Support Workers. Additionally, the position involves outreach activities such as planning and participating in events like CAL Open Doors, CAL Virtual Open House, Algonquin Open House, Department Orientations, and high school information sessions. Other responsibilities include preparing weekly and Ministry-mandated reports and addressing technical issues in the Clockwork database.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a four (4) year degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Education, Disability Studies, Psychology, or related fields.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related practical experience working with persons with disabilities in an educational setting.
  • Experience conducting clinical interviews and interpreting clinical documentation.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities to facilitate their academic, social, and career development.
  • Experience with report writing, data management, and statistical analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Completes intake sessions and clinical interviews for students without diagnostic documentation to determine the need for assessment, counseling, or referral services.
  • Provides guidance to students on accessing funding for psycho-educational assessments.
  • Collects and evaluates documentation to establish eligibility for support services, including reviewing psychoeducational assessments and medical documentation.
  • Develops and implements individualized assessment plans in consultation with students, ensuring compliance with College policies, the Ontario Human Rights Code, AODA, and relevant legislation.
  • Demonstrates in-depth understanding of disability-related documentation, including psycho-educational assessments and assessments of functional limitations, and recommends/develops assessment plans.
  • Assists and screens students with a wide range of disabilities, including Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Acquired Brain Injury, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Mental Health, Medical conditions, Visual Impairments, ADHD/ADD, using Level B assessment tools.
  • Guides and advises on the processing of BSWD requests.
  • Collaborates with the Financial Aid and Student Awards Office regarding BSWD and CSG-DSE funding.
  • Books and backfills employees/contractors providing services such as Educational Assistants, Visual Interpreters, American Sign Language Interpreters, and Personal Support Workers.
  • Collaborates with the Registrar’s Office to ensure available seats in labs and classrooms for contract support staff.
  • Coordinates access to Brightspace, equipment, textbooks, and other learning materials for third-party service providers.
  • Maintains practical working knowledge of the student information system (Genesis) and SharePoint.
  • Delivers disability education information sessions to students, staff, and faculty.
  • Represents CAL at outreach events (Algonquin College Open House, Guidance Teachers Forum, Campus Village).
  • Develops partnerships between CAL and other College departments to support students.
  • Leads the planning and coordination of the CAL Open Doors event for incoming students.
  • Monitors, maintains, and updates the CAL TEAMS site.
  • Maintains statistical data on the Student Support Services Dashboard weekly.
  • Analyzes statistical information from the Clockwork Database and Survey Monkey for service delivery and Ministry-mandated reporting.
  • Distributes weekly email communications to targeted student groups regarding events and deadlines.
