About The Position

The Student Services Officer (SSO) will support the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) educational mission within Duke University. DGHI offers an undergraduate major and minor, a two-year and accelerated Master of Science of Global Health (MS-GH) degree, plus a graduate certificate and a doctoral scholars program. Global Health students, staff, and faculty are committed to seeking health equity for vulnerable groups and individuals around the world. The SSO position focuses on undergraduate and graduate student advising, supporting student research, and institutional educational exchange. The SSO position will work alongside other DGHI education staff to support students, staff and faculty, and facilitate administrative processes across all degree programs.

Requirements

  • Work requires communications, planning and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of 2-3 years of experience and a bachelor's degree program.
  • A strong candidate will have previous experience in academic advising or student affairs.
  • A background in global health, international education or experience in an international setting is also preferred.
  • OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with faculty to develop and finalize the DGHI course schedule, ensuring all course offerings meet academic standards and institutional guidelines. Submit the final course schedule, reserve necessary learning spaces and communicate with faculty as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Education Program Coordinator to support course evaluation processes, including organization, data analysis and final reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director for Program Management and the DUS to support undergraduate data, curriculum and course initiatives.
  • Support management of Thesis and Graduation with Distinction processes in the MSGH and undergraduate programs, including tracking requirements, committee development, defense scheduling and documentation of thesis completion.
  • Advise current and prospective students across all degree-seeking programs (i.e., undergraduate and graduate) on degree requirements, experiential learning and professional development resources in global health. Maintain advising notes on individual students.
  • Coordinate undergraduate registration processes each semester, including development of registration guides, updating of key resources; review independent study applications and issue permission numbers
  • Support development, advising and tracking of undergraduate experiential learning opportunities
  • Serve as the primary advisor to the Global Health Majors’ Union, ensuring the organization maintains standards set forth by the Office of Student Affairs
  • Stay informed about trends in global health education programs and the field at large
  • Distribute information to faculty, students, prospective students, and the community at large about the education program offerings, requirements, and timelines
  • Collaborate with the communications team to recruit new students through information sessions, videos, class presentations and participation in annual Duke recruitment events
  • Oversee the development and distribution of print and digital advising materials. Track student participation through the LMS platform.
  • Assist the education team in the coordination of various annual student-facing projects and events.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by members of the education team and the faculty directors.
