About The Position

The Student Respiratory Therapist, also referred to as a Respiratory Therapy Clinical Student, works under the direct supervision of a Respiratory Therapist. The role focuses on learning and assisting with respiratory care procedures and treatments while maintaining patient safety. The student is typically enrolled in a respiratory therapy program and participates in clinical rotations at the hospital as part of their education. This is a per diem position, with variable shifts that are flexible for a student schedule.

Requirements

Must be approved by the State Respiratory Therapy Board to work as a Student Respiratory Therapist.
Must hold a current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain it.
Must be enrolled in an accredited respiratory program and have completed at least the first semester of clinical rotations.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must remain eligible for an accredited respiratory therapy program to work as a Student Respiratory Therapist.

Completion of more than one semester of the respiratory therapy program.
Other medical experience.

Responsibilities

Administer respiratory treatments, including oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, chest physiotherapy, and related respiratory care tasks.
Monitor patients’ respiratory rates, oxygen levels using pulse oximeters, and breathing patterns.
Assist with drawing and analyzing blood samples to assess oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH levels through arterial blood gases (ABGs).
Observe and adjust mechanical ventilators for patients who cannot breathe independently, ensuring settings are appropriate to their condition.
Conduct initial assessments of patients with breathing problems, including listening to lung sounds and assessing symptoms, and report findings to supervising respiratory therapists or doctors.
Assist with respiratory procedures, including intubation, extubation, and suctioning.
