About The Position

Assist Lake Superior Research Institute [LSRI] staff with conducting botanical surveys at multiply state owned properties throughout Wisconsin and sampling aquatic vegetation in Amnicon/Dowling Lake District. Invasive plant surveys will take place in the Coulee Experimental State Forest, Black River State Forest, Flambeau River State Forest, Governor Knowles State Forest, Willow Flowage Scenic Waters, and Brule River State Forest. Proximity of state forests to LSRI primary base of operations require that survey crew spend the work week (Monday – Friday) over night. Due to the remote nature of this work, hires may be asked to obtain University Driver Authorization and operate a motor vehicle on public roadways, however we are willing to accommodate students who do not possess an valid license. It is expected sixteen work weeks (64 nights) in total will be spent overnight. LSRI will provide students selected for this position lodging and a meal reimbursement while conducting these surveys. This department is looking for enthusiastic, flexible individuals with an interest in advancing their knowledge of invasive plants and aquatic vegetation. Requirements

  • Ability to prepare for and work in inclement conditions and be comfortable in a remote field setting in a small group.
  • Ability to lift/handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which can be affected by weather.
  • Ability to work 8-10 hours per day.
  • Ability to pass a background check and meet general Human Resource requirements.
  • Valid Class D or higher driver’s license.
  • Employment will require a criminal background check.
  • If you have prior work history within the last seven years with Universities of Wisconsin or State of Wisconsin agencies, a personnel file review check for employee misconduct.
  • References will be asked questions regarding employee misconduct, sexual violence and sexual harassment.
  • Verification of identity and legal right to work in the United States as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience paddling a canoe.
  • Experience operating a GPS unit.
  • Experience operating a point and shoot camera.
  • Experience recording data on a datasheet and/or tablet computer.
  • Experience with or a strong interest in scientific plant identification.
  • Demonstrated ability for attention to detail, for following instructions from co-workers and for good communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic, flexible individuals with an interest in advancing their knowledge of invasive plants and aquatic vegetation.
