About The Position

This position is for a Student Research Assistant specializing in Digital Humanities for the Feather Book Project (SSHRC) within Rare Books and Special Collections at McGill Library. The role involves developing a website using the McGill Web Management System (WMS) to host project descriptions, network member information, research outputs (essays, case studies, reports), and embedded videos. The assistant will also liaise with McGill Translation services to ensure the website is available in English and French, with some Italian content. Additionally, the role includes establishing a shared database on the FB Project Google Drive, investigating online platforms for publishing an annotated digital Feather Book, and assisting with internal communications for the research network using various technologies.

Requirements

  • MLIS, or Masters in progress
  • Experience of web development and design and knowledge of current web standards
  • Good general knowledge of technology, internet conferencing and file sharing technologies
  • Undergraduate degree in history, history of science, cultural geography or related discipline is useful.
  • Must be authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in the province of Quebec.
  • Must be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of French and Italian is an asset
  • Interest in knowledge management for academic research projects
  • Experience in digital preservation, file name protocols, and cloud-based storage options an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Feather Book Project website using McGill Web Management System (WMS).
  • Host project description, network members, short essays, case studies, reports, and embedded videos on the website.
  • Liaise with McGill Translation services to make the website available in English and French, with some Italian content.
  • Establish a shared database on FB Project Google Drive, following a template from McGill Libraries Cataloguing Services.
  • Investigate open and accessible online platforms for the publication of an annotated digital Feather Book.
  • Assist in maintaining internal communications between the research network using Google Drive, Zoom, and other technologies for research collaboration.
