About The Position

Virginia Commonwealth University's (VCU) School of Social Work has an exciting opportunity for two Student Recruiters. The Student Recruiter at Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) School of Social Work (SSW) will work closely with the Senior Student Recruitment Specialist, advisors for the Bachelor of Social Work(BSW) and/or Master of Social Work (MSW) programs, the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, program directors, faculty, and staff to ensure a seamless experience from the point of inquiry through advisor assignment. Student Recruiters provide student recruitment services for the BSW and/or MSW programs. They serve as liaisons to department or unit managers in order to effectively develop and implement recruitment strategies consistent with the university's overall recruitment strategy. Their typical duties include leading the coordination of undergraduate and graduate recruitment initiatives; conducting information sessions, interviews, and counseling sessions with prospective students and their parents; providing guidance to prospective applicants on program requirements and required documents, admission, and university procedures; utilizing pre-enrollment databases for admission status verification and outreach; traveling to recruitment events at college fairs, career fairs, social work conferences, and community colleges. They work under limited supervision, resolving moderately complex issues independently and referring more complex issues to the Senior Recruitment Specialist and/or Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. Their decisions and quality of services have a measurable impact on university and School of Social Work recruitment goals. This is an enterprise-wide position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, education, professional counseling, psychology or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience directly related to the responsibilities of the position.
  • 1-3 years of higher education or relevant experience.
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Ability to support and contribute to a dynamic and healthy team environment.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks concurrently and independently.
  • Ability to maintain confidential, accurate records and databases.
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with all Microsoft Office and Google Suite products, as well as various communication technologies including Google Apps, Zoom, and social media.
  • Ability to provide clear direction and establish efficient priorities.
  • Comfort with and the ability to travel for extended periods.
  • Ability to work weekend or evening recruitment events as scheduled by the School and university.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Responsibilities

  • Represent VCU at various student recruitment events and activities for the assigned area or student base including attending college fairs, career fairs, visits to high schools and community colleges.
  • Serve as a University liaison and provide exemplary customer service and information about the university to prospective undergraduate students, their parents, guidance counselors, and other constituencies.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct information sessions, interviews, and counseling sessions with prospective undergraduate students and their parents to provide information about the university, admissions processes, and university policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate data and applicant credentials for admission and counsel prospective students on their admissibility and ability to be successful once at VCU.
  • Coordinate and implement recruitment strategies to attract new incoming MSW students, BSW freshmen and transfer students and work closely with other University offices.
  • Respond to emails, participate in chat sessions, and make phone calls to prospective students to encourage campus visits and applications for admission
  • Maintain appropriate follow up communication with these students and their families regarding the status of their applications for admission and financial aid.
  • Participate in other Admissions recruitment activities including with campus partners and out of state.
  • Maintain relationships with secondary school counselors, community college counselors, and community-based organization leaders.
  • Other duties as assigned.
