About The Position

Pharmacy interns are enrolled in a pharmacy degree program at an accredited school of pharmacy and participate in the delivery of pharmacy services under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The pharmacy intern position will prepare individuals for their role as a future pharmacist. Interns are invited and encouraged to participate in educational activities within the Pharmacy Department including those associated with the pharmacy residency program. The intern may complete additional pharmacy projects in collaboration with pharmacy leadership and/or pharmacy residents.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required
  • Must be currently enrolled or plan to enroll in an accredited College of Pharmacy program or pre-pharmacy program.
  • Pharmacy or healthcare-related experience preferred but not required.
  • Must be eligible to register as a Pharmacy Intern or pharmacy technician in the state of employment as outlined by the Dept. of Consumer Protection (CT) or Dept. of Health (RI).
  • Proficiency in mathematical calculations; accuracy; problem solving; attention to detail
  • Knowledge of computer applications including word processing and spreadsheets
  • Ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to learn or perform pharmaceutical compounding, repackaging and labeling including manipulation of raw drug products using appropriate technique
  • Ability to work with computer and technology equipment including the ability to perform basic troubleshooting functions.
  • Must be able to prioritize competing demands, work independently, and show flexibility and teamwork.
  • Demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Consistently demonstrate HRO behaviors
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients and other healthcare team members
  • Assist with medication preparation, dispensing, and distribution in accordance with state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies
  • Performs necessary calculations and drug product manipulations, dilution, or compounding
  • Support inventory management activities, including receiving, restocking, expiration monitoring, and controlled substance handling
  • Support immunization initiatives if certified to immunize
  • Support optimal transitions of care (e.g. meds to beds, meds in hands)
  • Ensure accurate documentation and timely communication of medication related information
  • Efficiently collect best possible medication histories and provide patient education as needed
  • Participate in medication safety initiatives and quality improvement efforts as assigned
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, or projects as assigned
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and accreditation standards (e.g., state board of pharmacy, USP, Joint Commission)
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and data security in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies
  • Maintains a clean and organized work environment.
  • Clearly communicate and escalate concerns to the supervising pharmacist, manager and/or director of pharmacy as appropriate and in a timely manner
  • Perform relevant and pertinent duties as directed by departmental pharmacy leadership to support the needs of the department.
