About The Position

The Student Nurse Aide works under the direction of the RN/LPN. The responsibilities of the Student Nurse include providing direct patient care standards. The Student Nurse must exhibit the ability to work with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds; to organize, set priorities and manage multiple priorities, and to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.

Requirements

  • High School/GED required.
  • Completed a minimum of one year of clinical experience within an academic nursing program, and completed the following educational courses and clinical experience: Fundamentals of Nursing and Pharmacology including medication administration.
  • Currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited Associated Degree, Diploma or Baccalaureate Professional Nursing Program. (Nursing graduates pending passage of the NCLEX are eligible.)
  • BLS required before the conclusion of the orientation period.

Responsibilities

  • Provides basic and select advanced nursing care to patients within the Student Nurse Aide’s scope of practice that includes actions that meet psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and physical needs.
  • Advanced nursing activities that may be delegated to the competent Student Nurse Aide by the RN/LPN include simple dressing changes, phlebotomy, PIV removal, routine medication administration, and more as defined by policy.
  • Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age, gender, socioeconomic status, education, physical and mental abilities, and racial and ethnic background.
  • Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
  • Provides explanation to patients and families prior to administering care; answers questions within scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function appropriately in stressful situations.
  • Responds to patients in emergency or physically distressing situations.
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Assumes accountability for appropriate utilization of resources.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, within the Student Nurse Aide’s scope of practice.
