About The Position

Helen M Simpson Rehabilitation Hospital, a partnership between UPMC and Select Medical, is seeking a Student Nurse Tech (SNT) for a PRN position in Harrisburg, PA. This role offers an hourly compensation of $22.00. Our Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital is dedicated to providing exceptional and compassionate care to individuals facing challenges related to brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, neurological disorders, orthopedic issues, amputation, and multiple traumas. Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an accredited nursing school.
  • Proof of completion of the first year/fundamentals of nursing (or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of basic nursing techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of aseptic practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relations with others, including patients, families, physicians, and other hospital associates.
  • BLS required.
  • Post offer employment testing (POETs) are completed as part of the onboarding process and are to be completed before an employee's first day of work.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a nursing assistant may be required based on some state requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, performs procedures, collects and documents demographic and patient data.
  • Measures vital signs, height, and weight.
  • Assists patients with personal and daily care, including bathing, oral hygiene, shaving, and hair care.
  • Monitors and records intake and output.
  • Performs urinary catheter removal, finger stick blood sugars, and routine urine and stool specimen collection.
  • Provides ostomy care and empties drainage receptacles/tubes.
  • Performs bladder scans.
  • Removes peripheral IVs as directed by the RN (excluding those in the antecubital fossa or higher).
  • Delivers meals and snacks, and feeds patients who are unable to feed themselves.
  • Documents oral intake, including supplements.
  • Turns and positions immobile patients safely, maintaining proper body alignment.
  • Responds to patient call lights and performs services that enhance patient well-being.
  • Transports patients to designated areas and assists with moving patients in and out of stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Assists with physical examinations, exercise regimens, and postmortem care as directed.
  • Performs skin care, applies cold soaks and compresses as directed, reinforces wound dressings, removes wound dressings, and applies simple, clean dressings (excludes sterile wounds or complex dressings including NPWT, packing, medication, and multi-step dressings).
  • Applies Oxygen mask, trach mask, or Nasal Cannula as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of various instruments and equipment such as bedpans, urinals, bedside commodes, glucometers, scales, and carts.
  • Disinfects equipment between patients.
  • Keeps the patient’s room clean and orderly, makes beds, replaces soiled linen, straightens and disinfects bedside tables, and prepares the room for occupancy.
  • Provides age-appropriate care to patients 13 and older.
  • Assists in restocking rooms, trays, and cabinets for adequate supplies and inventory; assists with cleaning when necessary.
  • Demonstrates proper use and maintenance of patient scales, carts, and lifts.
