About The Position

The Student Nurse Tech assists with patient care under the direct supervision of the registered nurse.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful passing of Fundamentals of Nursing Course as determined by the institution in which they are enrolled.
  • Currently participating in a Nursing program at an accredited institution.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
  • Must be able to stand for twelve (12) hours, walk, sit, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, talk, hear and smell.
  • Must be able to lift or exert energy up to 35 pounds.
  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe area that can be seen move up/down or left/right) and depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances).
  • Ability to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, correspondence and/or manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, families, other employees, and medical staff.
  • Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize assigned and assumed responsibilities to complete tasks as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Recognizes, obtains and reports appropriate data to the staff.
  • Provides patient care services to include basic hygiene, bathing and feeding functions. Obtains vital signs.
  • Appropriately documents findings and information.
  • Communicates appropriate information to the staff as required.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy. Maintains confidentiality of patient and unit care data.
  • Has access to minimal risk medications contained in kits, trays or packs associated with certain procedures, as well as IV fluids stored in patient care areas and automated dispensing units.
  • Assist physicians or nurses with procedures.
  • Collect specimens in accordance with established policies and final check.
  • Perform Bladder Scans.
  • Perform urinary catheterization.
  • Perform non-medicated dressing changes.
  • Perform sterile techniques as needed for any listed activity.
  • Perform EKGs.
  • Visit patients to assess care received using patient family focused care and customer service guidelines.
  • Follows the MUSC Standards of Behaviors.
  • Other duties as assigned.
