Under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), provides safe, personal patient care. Performs procedures that are documented on individual Student Nurse Intern Skills List. The Student Nurse Intern will assist in admitting patients by orienting them to the hospital routine in a sincere and helpful manner. They will also transfer, discharge, and escort patients courteously and safely. Communication is perceived to be clear, concise and relevant. The intern will safely and effectively perform selected patient care procedures (i.e. turning, positioning, ambulating, range of motion and application of restraints) as well as procedures listed in the Student Nurse Intern competency document. They will accurately collect and record measurements, vital signs and specimens (i.e. blood pressure, temperature, weight, intake and output). Documentation of procedures is accurate, timely and legible. The intern will actively contribute to the development of the plan of care, with contributions reflecting knowledge of care appropriate for the individual patient's needs. They will promptly and clearly communicate to the RN pertinent information such as changes in patient condition and questions about patient care. The intern will demonstrate good judgment and the ability to focus on relevant patient problems. They will recognize the occurrence of life-threatening situations and emergencies and take the appropriate actions in a timely manner. Emergencies include, but are not limited to: fire, tornado, disaster, cardiopulmonary arrest; or sudden physiological developments, physical injury situations, psychiatric crisis, adverse treatment reactions and suicide attempts. Patient rooms and areas are neat and well maintained. The intern will take personal responsibility to clean, maintain and store equipment. The intern will have comprehensive knowledge and proficient skill in the assessment, planning, implementation and/or evaluation of care for the pediatric (neonates, children, adolescents) through geriatric patient. This includes displaying appropriate knowledge of the growth and development of the pediatric patient and demonstrating proper skills in providing care; monitoring the pediatric through geriatric patients' physical and emotional condition before, during and after procedures, providing explanations, reassurances and comfort appropriate for patients' growth and development levels; demonstrating a sensitivity to the special family needs of the pediatric through geriatric patient; and displaying knowledge of and utilizing correct procedures when operating equipment during a procedure for the pediatric through geriatric patient.
