MU Health Care’s 12-week Student Nurse Externship is designed for nursing students within one year of graduation. This program offers hands-on experience, allowing students to work alongside experienced RNs, gain confidence, and build a foundation for their future nursing careers. Upon successful completion, externs may have the opportunity to continue as a senior student nurse extern and receive special consideration for Graduate Nurse (GN) positions. The externship provides direct mentorship from experienced RNs, opportunities to practice advanced skills under RN supervision, and immersive patient care experience across various hospital units. It aims to build confidence and provide real-world experience to prepare students for their nursing careers. The program includes a 36-hour workweek that mirrors the life of a nurse. The academic health system is the only one in mid-Missouri and includes seven hospitals, the region's only Level 1 Trauma Center, and the region's only Children's Hospital, along with over 90 specialty clinics.
