About The Position

This position assists with the admission process by taking initial vital signs, measurements, weights, orienting patient/family to unit, hospital facilities and services, and documenting per unit standards. The Student Nurse Extern assists the RN in the delivery of patient care according to unit standards, policies and procedures, and the patient’s plan of care. The extern contributes relevant and appropriate information to the RN, maintains confidentiality of patient information, and supports the Patient Bill of Rights. The extern participates in meeting and reinforcing patient’s educational needs and documents accordingly. The extern demonstrates knowledge of sterile technique. Under the direction of the RN, the extern monitors and accurately records patient intake and output, and reports changes in patient’s status to the RN in a timely manner. Under the direction of the RN, the extern assists the patient with routine activities of daily living: feeding, bathing, ambulating, and skin care according to policy and documents appropriately. The extern demonstrates effective interpersonal skills appropriate to the age, type, and development level of patients. With RN supervision, the extern performs basic nursing procedures (starting IV’s, NG tube placement, etc.) per Delegation of Patient Care Activities Policy. The extern may not administer medication. The extern performs nursing assessment, for learning purposes, in conjunction with the licensed RN who performs an independent assessment and provides validation/co-signature of documentation. The extern assists the RN with discharge planning and patient education under direct RN supervision. The extern provides and documents patient treatments under RN supervision. The extern provides emotional support to patients and families and documents appropriately. The extern attends and participates in unit related in-services, conferences, and meetings. The extern collaborates by working with others to achieve unit and organizational goals and utilizes the proper chain of command for resolution of difficult issues. The extern participates in unit staff meetings and CQI plan to improve organizational performance and achieve unit and organizational goals. The extern performs other related duties as assigned. The extern clearly communicates and continuously supports the Mission and Values of Johnson Memorial Health. The extern conducts all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and Johnson Memorial Health policies and procedures including Blood and Body Substance Precautions and JMH’s Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Policy.

Requirements

  • Must be in the senior year of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at an accredited school of nursing.
  • Must maintain current BLS or CPR for the Healthcare Provider certification.
