About The Position

The Student Naturalists work to engage the college and the community to interact with and understand the St. Olaf Natural Lands. This position requires crouching, stooping, twisting/pivoting, climbing/balancing, reaching overhead, grasping/handling, pushing/pulling, lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs., driving, operating hand tools, and operating equipment or machinery to perform the essential functions. It also requires exposure to respiratory factors, chemicals, vibrations, extreme cold, extreme heat, and proximity hazards, as well as rare exposure to loud noise, wet or humid conditions indoors, and heights or cramped quarters to perform the essential functions. Protective equipment is required for some essential functions. Candidates must possess the ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in Land/Prairie Management
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Able to work in a team environment
  • Able to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience with hand tools for land management

Responsibilities

  • Organize campus wide tree plantings, seed collecting, etc.
  • Create environmental education opportunities for the community
  • Create & maintain Natural Lands information/volunteer board
  • Organize and lead field trips
  • Create Instagram posts to advertise events
  • Help with prescribed burns
  • Work with Natural Lands Manager to remove invasive species
  • Participate in natural history education training
