DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system serving the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. Established in 1993, DMC University Laboratories encompasses Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, two rapid response hospital laboratories, a Centralized Stat Lab, a Centralized Blood Bank Lab, and a comprehensive outreach infrastructure including patient service centers, remote ambulatory laboratories, marketing staff, a courier system, and a billing department. DMC University Laboratories serves the entire Southeast Michigan market and is experiencing rapid growth. Key features include a test menu of over 1,000 tests, with less than 1.25% of tests sent to outside reference laboratories. The system also provides reference laboratory services to numerous other healthcare systems in Southeastern Michigan and several out-of-state facilities. Job Summary: Under close supervision, the Student Medical Lab Technician performs routine clinical laboratory tests of a repetitive nature, typically limited to one laboratory section. The role involves performing routine qualitative and quantitative clinical laboratory tests on patient specimens, adhering to established methodologies, policies, and procedures. Responsibilities include preparing and maintaining accurate records of specimens, potentially preparing media, stains, reagents, and other solutions. The technician will analyze test results, communicate them to physicians and authorized personnel, and record and review results for accuracy and quality control compliance. Additionally, the role involves utilizing, calibrating, and maintaining laboratory equipment, performing quality control checks, and obtaining patient specimens such as blood for transport to the laboratory. Proper selection, use, cleaning, and maintenance of equipment are essential. The position requires compliance with administrative lab policies, lab safety, OSHA accreditation, and regulatory agency requirements. The technician will also perform other related duties as assigned and promote DMC values through supportive behaviors.
