About The Position

The Student Mechanical Project Engineer provides entry-level project and technical support to the Mechanical Program Manager, Project Manager, Project Engineer, Foreman, and other project personnel on mechanical construction and maintenance projects. The position assists with mechanical takeoffs, submittals, Requests for Information RFIs, equipment and material tracking, project documentation, scheduling, field coordination, and progress tracking while gaining practical exposure to mechanical construction operations, including piping, HVAC, equipment installation, and fabrication activities. This temporary position is intended for a student currently enrolled in a related postsecondary program and is expected to last approximately four (4) months, with the possibility of extension based on project needs and performance. Work will be primarily office-based, with periodic travel to project sites throughout Alaska to support field documentation, coordination, and project activities.

Requirements

Ability to learn and apply basic mechanical construction principles, project requirements, and technical information under the direction of experienced project and engineering personnel.
Basic knowledge of the mechanical construction and maintenance industry and a strong willingness to learn.
Basic knowledge of mechanical symbols, equipment layouts, piping, HVAC, fabrication, and conventions associated with typical mechanical construction drawings.
Basic knowledge of submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), submittal registers, and construction documentation processes.
Ability to gather information, identify potential issues, and assist project staff with developing solutions.
Ability to work effectively in group problem-solving situations and collaborate with field and office personnel.
Ability to communicate effectively using both verbal and written methods.
Ability to prioritize tasks, organize work activities, and use time efficiently.
Ability to approach others tactfully, receive direction professionally, and work effectively in a fast-paced project environment.

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rates, ratios, percentages, quantities, and measurements and interpret basic charts, graphs, and project information.
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams, with the ability to learn construction management, document control, scheduling, and other company software systems.
Completion of 2–3 years of postsecondary education in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Business Administration or related field of study preferred.
Minimum six (6) months’ experience in the construction industry or design related to construction preferred.
Valid current state driver’s license and must be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Company’s Driving Policy.
Ability to pass drug, driving, and background screenings.

Experience with construction-related software such as HeavyJob, Spectrum, Bluebeam, Procore, Primavera P6, or similar systems preferred.

Responsibilities

Assist with mechanical takeoffs using project drawings, specifications, and construction plans.
Assist project staff with reviewing mechanical drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, and project requirements.
Support project staff with quantity tracking, project documentation, and material coordination.
Assist with tracking mechanical equipment, materials, fabrication activities, Requests for Information (RFIs), submittals, and procurement status.
Support coordination of mechanical scopes of work, including piping, HVAC, equipment installation, and fabrication activities, as applicable to the project.
Assist with field verification, quantity tracking, progress documentation, and identification of discrepancies between project documents and field conditions.
Assist with compiling project quantities, progress information, and other project data for use in project reporting and tracking.
Assist the Foreman and project staff with the preparation and organization of daily project reports and other project documentation.
Prepare and organize submittmits, equipment documentation, O&M manuals, and other required mechanical project deliverables for review and submission.
Assist with maintaining organized project files, records, and other project documentation.
Maintain detailed project records, including job diaries, photographs, and video documentation of work progress.
Draft routine correspondence related to project work activities, equipment coordination, project coordination, and field activities as directed.
Document changes in work scope, conditions, and field activities and communicate updates to the Foreman, Project Manager, and other appropriate project personnel.
Assist with project health, safety, and environmental compliance documentation and reporting.
Support the Project Manager and project team with updating, monitoring, and maintaining the project schedule.
Travel to remote work locations for extended periods as required by project needs.
Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
Perform other duties as assigned.
