The Student Histotechnician will be instrumental in providing support functions in the dermatopathology laboratory and supporting a multi-site dermatology practice. This role involves delivering safe and accurate lab services, including embedding, sectioning, and staining, while demonstrating reliable clinical practices and compliance with lab-related regulations.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university. Or at minimum 12 science credits which must include a combination of biology and chemistry (required).
  • Minimum 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university required at time of hire with expectation that 60 total will be completed by the completion of training.
  • Minimum 12 science credits required which must include a combination of biology and chemistry.
  • Expected that employee will successfully complete the training and sit for and pass their HT(ASCP) certification exam within a maximum of 5 years from their hire date in the laboratory.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without restriction. We will not sponsor applicants for work visas.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior anatomic pathology laboratory preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe and accurate lab services, under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager and in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Complete comprehensive laboratory technician training/orientation on Epiphany laboratory protocols, procedures, and testing imperatives.
  • Perform administrative lab duties within scope of practice.
  • Provide feedback on status and/or reports to providers, as necessary.
  • Accurately document within our EHR, per guidelines and appropriate limited access.
  • Receive, organize, and prepare patient tissue samples for microscopic evaluation by the Dermatopathologist, including confirming patient identity, correctly embedding processed tissue samples, sectioning tissue on a microtome or cryostat, correctly following staining protocols to include routine hematoxylin & eosin, special stains, direct immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry, and correctly labeling completed slides.
  • Assist with laboratory send-outs to include slide and block requests as required.
  • General lab maintenance, including slide and block organization and storage, and maintenance of CLIA required records and documentation.
  • Assist with completing and maintaining all compliance related paperwork to include temperature and humidity information, chemical reagent log sheets, patient information logs, and quality assurance forms.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols.
  • Provide excellent customer service in person or on the telephone when answering or referring inquiries.
  • Other duties as assigned.
