About The Position

The Student Fitness Instructor is responsible for assisting Recreational Sports Fitness staff with providing a safe, healthy, and positive environment for fitness class participants. This role involves implementing procedures for fitness programming, preparing and implementing proper choreography, assisting the Program Manager of Strength & Fitness, supporting Rec Sports operations, and mentoring new instructors.

Requirements

  • Enrolled at least half-time, 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate and 3 credit hours per semester for graduates.
  • Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students.
  • Must meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).
  • Knowledge of safe exercise techniques and principles.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to ensure participants are executing proper form and encouraging safety.
  • Ability to plan and conduct classes independently.
  • Ability to recruit and retain fitness class participants.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a population and provide modifications for various fitness levels.
  • Ability to maintain a positive work including punctuality, professional dress, behavior, and attitude.
  • Ability to assist and mentor fitness staff.
  • Must obtain CPR/AED certification within 60 days of employment.
  • Must attend Fitness Instructors in Training class.
  • Position may require moving and lifting objects and materials as necessary.
  • Position may also require various exercise movements including jumping, squatting, lifting weight equipment, etc.
  • Position requires on campus, face-to-face interactions.
  • Position requires maintaining a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.
  • Promptly complete all required training.
  • Submit time sheet biweekly.

  • Knowledge of the use of various fitness equipment.
  • Knowledge of University policies KWRC Fitness guidelines and procedures to ensure a safe, positive, and enjoyable environment for fitness class participation.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting Recreational Sports Staff with providing a safe, healthy, and positive environment for fitness class participants.
  • Implementing procedures for fitness programming, which includes but not limited to, emergency protocols.
  • Preparing and implementing proper choreography to include regressions and progressions for all fitness levels for assigned fitness classes.
  • Assisting the Program Manager of Strength & Fitness of Rec Sports activities.
  • Supporting Rec Sports operations by assisting in day-to-day functions such as taking inventory, cleaning fitness studies, storage, and maintaining fitness equipment.
  • Mentoring and guiding new instructors to ensure existing fitness guidelines and procedures are being communicated.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
