About The Position

Under the general direction of the Manager, the Accountant performs professional accounting work requiring a thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and practices. This position is responsible for the accounting, analysis, and reconciliation of State and Federal Grants, Scholarships, Loans, and other financial accounts. The Accountant ensures the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial data by preparing, analyzing, validating, and reconciling a wide range of financial reports and transactions related to financial aid programs and Student Financial Services operations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices, with ability to perform analyses, make recommendations, and present data effectively.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to interpret and communicate complex rules and policies.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for working in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Proficient in PeopleSoft (Student Financials, Financial Aid, Finance) and Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills to ensure timely, accurate completion of tasks.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex federal and state regulations.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a closely related field required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Two years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience preferred.
  • Governmental accounting experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Performs the processing, analysis, billing, system testing, and reconciliation of Federal, State, and Institutional financial aid programs, Alternative Loans, External Scholarships, Foundation and ASI Scholarships, other financial aid accounts, stale dated checks reconciliation, and other related student account transactions.
  • Performs analysis, system testing, reconciliation, and submission of Franchise Tax Board intercepts and 1098-T processes that includes responding to emails from the Disbursements and 1098-T email boxes.
  • Provides support to the office through additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
