About The Position

Horizons at Carolina Day seeks a Family Support Specialist to provide counseling support for students, maintain strong relationships between the program, the caregiver community, and students, and teach Social Emotional Learning Lessons. This position will collaborate with Horizons’ families and the teaching team to develop and implement plans that support the social-emotional wellbeing of students. This is a summer position taking place from June 15th – July 24, 2023. June 19th and July 3rd are program holidays. Hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm. Horizons at Carolina Day, an affiliate of the nationally renowned Horizons program, is a public-private partnership that provides academic, cultural, and recreational summer programming designed to support economically disadvantaged students in realizing their full potential. The heart of Horizons is a six week equity-centered summer academic program that supports a cohort of students in reading, writing, math, and science, paired with swimming lessons, field trips, sports, and enrichment activities in the performing and visual arts. The program also includes a year-round component featuring online tutoring, Saturday events, regular visits to schools, and communication with students’ schools and teachers. The primary goal of Horizons is to reverse the trend of summer learning loss that adversely impacts the long-term success of students from underserved communities. The student/teacher ratio at Horizons is approximately 5:1.

Requirements

  • Warm, attentive, collaborative demeanor
  • Understanding of how culture, race, and socio-economic status intersect within the learning experiences of young people
  • Passion for education equity, social-emotional wellness
  • Experience working with underserved youth and communities
  • Training in and experience using effective behavioral health strategies
  • Experience providing counseling and/or structured emotional support to youth
  • Experience working with caregivers in a community-based setting
  • Strong relational skills, demonstrated through warmth and the ability to work well with a team
  • Ability to maintain the confidence of students and their families
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Nice To Haves

  • MSW or other counseling related master’s degree preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide student support through behavioral intervention and motivation strategies
  • Implementation of a curriculum focused on social-emotional competencies
  • Help to facilitate teacher-caregiver relationships
  • Work collaboratively with caregivers to develop and implement remediation plans for students
  • Work with families to discuss and connect to outside support when needed
  • Aid in the development and implementation of crisis management protocols
  • Follow up with families on attendance on a regular basis
  • Attend all mandatory staff trainings and meetings
