About The Position

Student Life strives to enhance opportunities for students to participate fully in the University experience. We do this by providing information, services, programs and involvement opportunities that facilitate responsible life choices and promote awareness of self and community. Each of the program areas within Student Life has a specific mission, but one common goal: to provide education, outreach, and support to you. The Student Development Specialist II is responsible for programmatic support and advising of the Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG). This position is devoted to supervising the Student Research Week director and support the governance board with all programming planning and execution. Additionally, this position oversees the Grad Camp Director and works directly with programming co-chairs and directors to support the GPSG. The SDS II assists in the development and execution of planning, promoting, and implementing student developmental programs/activities/services for the GPSG Governance Board. This position has afterhours commitments, with a standing board meeting on Tuesdays and programs throughout the semester.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of experience in student affairs work or related specialty.
  • Ability to apply college student development and advising principals to effectively advise graduate and professional students.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to positively and professionally interact with students and staff.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of office software and instructional computer programs – like Google Drive, the Microsoft suite (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Skilled in utilizing various learning and active listening strategies.
  • Ability to orally comprehend and express information and use inductive and deductive reasoning.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Leadership or equivalent area from an accredited college or university.
  • Direct student advising experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary advisor to the Graduate and Professional Student Government.
  • Attend governance board and senate meetings.
  • Meet one on one with officers and members as appropriate.
  • Support and advise a governance board of 15-20 members.
  • Provide support and guidance to the election commissioner assisting in the implementation and execution of the annual campus-wide election process.
  • Serve as a staff liaison/point of contact with campus-wide administrative offices.
  • Stay abreast of campus policies to ensure programs meet all student rules and university policy expectations.
  • Supervise and advise the Student Research Week Director, a GANT position.
  • Assist with the formation and advising of the Student Research Week committee.
  • Attend regularly scheduled Student Research Week meetings, including all funding meetings.
  • Advise, coordinate and assist in facilitation of Graduate and Professional Student Government programming efforts, including Grad Camp, Stand out and Succeed, Student Research Week, Bring Your Own Research, workshops, and the annual awards banquet.
  • Manage, coordinate and facilitate Student Life programs including Graduate and Professional Student Wine Tasting and Student Life Spotlight events.
  • Provide oversight and support for Student Research Week, a week-long research event focused on undergraduate and graduate student competition in both oral and poster sessions; as well as plenary sessions.
  • Creates and submits necessary end of event reports.
  • Serves as a communication link between students, staff and the Department.
  • Makes necessary purchases and completes administrative processes.
  • Attends committee meetings and completes assignments.
  • Oversee student leaders with decisions regarding allocations and expenses.
  • Understand and oversee all programming budgets.
  • Oversee the coordination and collaboration of the monthly reconciliation process between student leaders and department staff.
  • Support the annual budgeting process which is overseen by the Assistant Director.
  • Manage products and events in TAMU Marketplace on behalf of student organization.
  • Support the development of presentations to the Student Affairs Fee Advisory Board.
  • Coordinate training and activities that enhance the graduate student leadership experience focused in communication, unity, team building, and conflict management.
