About The Position

This posting covers several different positions with the VISTA newspaper: Editor-in-Chief, Digital/Managing Editor, Photographer, Sports Editor, Photo Editor, and Reporter. The Vista is a department within Mass Communication and was established in 1903 as the student newspaper of the University of Central Oklahoma and is the longest, continually published student newspaper in the state. This is a part-time role with hours ranging from 10-20 per week.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled at least half-time for fall/spring semesters (6 hours for undergraduates, 5 hours for graduates).
  • F1/J1 Visa students must be enrolled full-time for fall/spring semesters (12 credit hours for undergraduates, 9 for graduates).
  • Must be enrolled in at least 3 summer credit hours or be enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in the minimum credit hours required for their classification and employment type to work during the summer.
  • For Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) positions, students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours (undergraduate) or 5 credit hours (graduate).
  • New incoming students are not eligible for student employment until the semester in which they begin classes.

Responsibilities

  • Editor-in-Chief: Guiding a Digital First approach and overseeing the weekly version of The Vista, acting as the voice and face of the student newspaper, overseeing all other positions on the paper, overseeing and managing layout and design, contributing articles for weekly content, acting as head editorial writer, and leading weekly staff meetings.
  • Digital/Managing Editor: Assigning stories, managing assignments, assisting in page design, coordinating photography and copy editing stories, generating story ideas, and occasionally reporting as needed.
  • Sports Editor: Assigning sports stories, managing assignments, assisting in page design, coordinating photography and copy editing stories, generating story ideas, and reporting as needed.
  • Photo Editor: Assigning and shooting events on and off campus for weekly photographic content, ensuring each story is assigned a photographer to provide art, ensuring each story has said art attached before publishing, communicating with staff to determine effective art, assigning and contributing photo-stories throughout the semester, ensuring proper layout and design needs are met for each photo before publishing, and other duties as assigned.
  • Photographer: Shooting assigned stories in a variety of subjects, including news, sports, activities and entertainment.
  • Reporter: Interviewing, reporting, and editing stories/articles.
