About The Position

East Side House Settlement is a community resource in the South Bronx that believes education is key to creating economic and civic opportunities. They are seeking a dynamic, hard-working, and creative leader for the PS179 program, in partnership with East Side House. This program is committed to the intellectual and emotional growth of every student through a nurturing and supportive learning environment. The Student Advisor will support attendance improvement, develop relationships with students and families, and coordinate resources and programs addressing attendance, academics, socio-emotional well-being, and health. The role involves working with students and families before, during, and after school, as well as during the school year and summer months. The Student Advisor will report to the Community School Director and is expected to perform essential duties satisfactorily.

Requirements

  • B.A./B.S.W. with at least two years of experience with youth-related work.
  • Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with school-aged youth, educators, families, and communities from a wide range of cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
  • Experience working in school-based settings (Elementary and/or Middle School).
  • Knowledge about tenants of community organizing, student support services, and youth development theories.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with strong relationship-building skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in WordPerfect/Microsoft Word and other applications.
  • Sufficient technology skills including the ability to learn new software and programs, complete digital paperwork requirements, communicate effectively via email, and a willingness to learn new skills/complete basic troubleshooting.
  • Department of Education (DOE) fingerprinting clearance.
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 or ability to obtain vaccination before the start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
  • Some nights and weekends are required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary advisor for an assigned cohort of students.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one sessions with students at least twice a month.
  • Support students in creating and implementing SMART goals.
  • Partner with students, families, school staff, and Community School teams to develop individualized student plans.
  • Conduct and support student advisory groups in collaboration with school faculty.
  • Provide progress updates on students to leadership and key school staff.
  • Participate in weekly case conferencing with school and CS staff.
  • Provide crisis intervention and counseling for students as needed, under the supervision of the Program Director.
  • Conduct attendance outreach through various methods including phone calls, texts, letters, remote communication, and home visits.
  • Organize and implement special activities and events to meet the recreational, cultural, and social needs of the school community.
  • Support the new student admission process, including outreach, open houses, intake interviews, and orientations for students and parents.
  • Partner with students to identify opportunities and referrals based on their needs and aspirations.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director to create best practices for cohort management and support services.
  • Build strong relationships with families to provide support, resources, and opportunities for growth.
  • Work to implement family engagement structures within the school, including parent workshops, volunteer opportunities, and connections to community resources.
  • Work individually with families needing additional support, accessing East Side House's internal Social Services Department for counseling, entitlement screening, referrals, and adult education opportunities.
  • Collaborate in the successful management of the program with the Program Director, NYCDOE Staff, and the school community.
  • Lead or champion school events to build community, pride, and a welcoming environment.
  • Prepare and present workshops for student development in leadership, life skills, and self-efficacy.
  • Collaborate with leadership to design tools and strategies for tracking and meeting program goals.
  • Strategize with the team for program improvement.
  • Attend and participate in various meetings, including in-school/community-based meetings, administrative meetings, and professional development trainings.
  • Complete tasks and projects assigned by the Program Director.
