About The Position

East Side House Settlement is a community resource in the South Bronx dedicated to providing exceptional programming to children and families. The Bronx Design and Construction Academy and Bronx Haven High School partnership with East Side House aims to foster the intellectual and emotional growth of every student through a nurturing and supportive learning environment. This role supports attendance improvement, develops relationships with students and families, and connects community members to successful outcomes. The Student Advisor, under the supervision of the Community School Director, will perform essential duties related to student support, attendance outreach, crisis intervention, and program coordination.

Requirements

  • B.A./B.S.W. with at least two years' experience with youth-related work.
  • Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and multi-task.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community service/development.
  • Knowledge and experience in WordPerfect/ Microsoft Word and other applications.
  • Employees must be clear to work at ESH.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary advisor for an assigned cohort of students, conducting regular one-on-one sessions.
  • Support students in creating and implementing SMART goals.
  • Partner with students, families, school staff, and Community School teams to develop individualized student plans.
  • Conduct and support student advisory groups in collaboration with school faculty.
  • Provide progress updates on students to leadership and key school staff, participating in weekly case conferencing.
  • Provide crisis intervention and counseling for students as needed, under supervision.
  • Conduct attendance outreach through various methods including phone calls, texts, letters, remotely, and home visits.
  • Organize and implement special activities and events to meet the recreational, cultural, and social needs of the school community.
  • Support the new student admission process, including outreach, open houses, intake interviews, and orientations.
  • Partner with students to identify opportunities and referrals based on their needs and aspirations.
  • Assist students in defining career interests and exploring them through internships and job shadowing.
  • Partner with ESH Workforce Development and College Access Counselor and Internship Coordinator for postsecondary planning.
  • Track students' academic progress using report cards, progress reports, and other school-provided resources.
  • Help students identify strengths and challenges to develop SMART goals and capitalize on growth opportunities.
  • Support students in developing employability skills through individual and group activities.
  • Collaborate in program management with the Program Director, NYCDOE Staff, and the school community.
  • Lead or champion school events to build community, pride, and a welcoming environment.
  • Prepare and present workshops for student development in leadership, life skills, and self-efficacy.
  • Collaborate with leadership to design tools and strategies for tracking and meeting program goals.
  • Strategize with the team for program improvement.
  • Attend and participate in various meetings, including in-school/community-based meetings, administrative meetings, and professional development trainings.
  • Complete tasks and projects assigned by the Program Director.
