Structured Cabling Project Manager

Acuative•Strongsville, OH

About The Position

The Structured Cabling Project Manager is responsible for the financial, operational, and technical delivery of structured cabling and low-voltage infrastructure projects. Projects range from demarcation extensions, small cabling refreshes, and moves/adds/changes to complex new-construction deployments across retail, commercial, government, defense, enterprise, and other customer environments. The role owns projects from opportunity handoff and kickoff through final acceptance, closeout, and financial reconciliation. The Project Manager leads planning, scheduling, scope and risk management, customer and construction coordination, vendor and subcontractor performance, procurement, quality, documentation, and change control. They are accountable for project budgets, costs, forecasts, revenue, and target margins, while balancing customer satisfaction with commercial discipline. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring substantial knowledge of structured cabling and low-voltage construction, including design and takeoff, installation, testing, certification, closeout, and financial reconciliation. The Project Manager coordinates with customers, general contractors, construction managers, electrical contractors, subcontractors, architects, engineers, vendors, distributors, field technicians, and internal project coordinators. They also direct and mentor Structured Cabling Project Coordinators. The successful candidate can independently manage work from straightforward service projects through complex, multi-floor, multi-building, and multi-site construction deployments. They adapt execution to differing customer environments and requirements, including construction sequencing, security, access restrictions, documentation, standards, and stakeholder complexity. RCDD, BICSI certifications, and other recognized industry credentials are highly preferred. The role requires travel to active project sites as needed.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of project management experience in structured cabling, low-voltage construction, telecommunications infrastructure, or a closely related field.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of structured cabling systems and low-voltage construction.
  • Demonstrated experience managing project budgets, costs, change orders, and project margins.
  • Experience managing projects from small service work through complex construction deployments.
  • Experience working with general contractors, construction managers, vendors, subcontractors, and field installation teams.
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, floor plans, and low-voltage design documentation.
  • Experience with material takeoffs, Bill of Materials development, procurement, and project financial management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with customers and executive and internal stakeholders.
  • Advanced organization, scheduling, risk management, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to travel to active project sites as required.
  • Ability to manage structured cabling project scope, schedule, risks, customer commitments, and financial performance independently.
  • Knowledge of structured cabling systems, including Category 5e, Category 6, Category 6A, fiber optic, coaxial, and other low-voltage infrastructure.
  • Understanding of cabling pathways and components, MDF/IDF design concepts, telecommunications spaces, and horizontal and vertical cabling architectures.
  • Ability to validate material takeoffs and develop accurate Bills of Materials.
  • Understanding of cable labeling, testing, certification, test-result documentation, as-built requirements, and closeout standards.
  • Working knowledge of TIA/EIA standards, BICSI practices, NEC requirements, customer specifications, and applicable construction standards.
  • Understanding of construction sequencing and interfaces among low-voltage cabling, electrical, construction, security, AV, network equipment, and other trades.

Nice To Haves

  • RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer).
  • BICSI certification or active participation in BICSI training or programs.
  • BICSI Installer 1–3 or Technician (TECH) certification.
  • CNCI or a comparable structured cabling credential.
  • Fiber optic certification or documented fiber design and testing experience.
  • Experience coordinating fiber optic installation, splicing, termination, testing, and certification.
  • Experience with CAD, Visio, takeoff or estimating software, or construction management platforms.
  • PMP certification or formal project management training.
  • Experience managing national or multi-site structured cabling programs.
  • Experience with project management, estimating, procurement, or construction management platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Own structured cabling projects from opportunity handoff and kickoff through final acceptance, closeout, and financial reconciliation.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, milestones, dependencies, resource plans, risk registers, action items, and customer commitments.
  • Manage projects ranging from demarcation extensions, moves/adds/changes, and cabling additions to multi-floor, multi-building, and new-construction deployments.
  • Define project scope, assumptions, exclusions, deliverables, acceptance criteria, and responsibilities across involved parties.
  • Lead customer kickoff, construction coordination, progress, and closeout meetings.
  • Coordinate with customers, general contractors, construction managers, electrical contractors, low-voltage subcontractors, architects, engineers, vendors, distributors, and customer representatives.
  • Provide timely project status reporting on schedule, budget, risks, issues, change orders, and overall project health.
  • Identify project risks early and develop mitigation and recovery plans.
  • Manage scope changes and ensure change orders are documented, priced, approved, and incorporated into project plans.
  • Ensure projects meet customer requirements, contractual commitments, applicable standards, and internal quality expectations.
  • Direct and mentor Structured Cabling Project Coordinators and establish accountability for project deliverables.
  • Apply knowledge of cabling systems, pathways, telecommunications spaces, construction drawings, standards, takeoffs, Bills of Materials, testing, certification, and closeout requirements to project execution.
  • Assess labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and logistical requirements when preparing project plans and budgets.
  • Manage project financial performance against revenue, cost, and target margin objectives.
  • Build, validate, and maintain project budgets; track committed and actual costs, forecast-to-complete, projected margin, and margin variance.
  • Review vendor and subcontractor proposals, pricing, assumptions, exclusions, and lead times; manage purchase orders and subcontractor commitments.
  • Review invoices against purchase orders, completed work, approved scope, and contractual requirements.

  • Select and manage qualified vendors and subcontractors, setting expectations for schedule, quality, safety, documentation, testing, staffing, and communication.
  • Monitor vendor and subcontractor productivity, resolve performance issues, and escalate when needed.
  • Coordinate material procurement, confirm availability before scheduling field work, and manage long-lead materials or recovery options.
  • Coordinate low-voltage work sequencing with general contractors, construction managers, and other trades.
  • Participate in pre-construction walkthroughs and site surveys to assess constructability, access, pathways, spaces, and installation requirements.
  • Travel to active project sites as required.
